Research released in 2023 by the Australian Institute of Sport established a clear correlation between an elevated susceptibility to skin cancer and individuals who habitually perform their occupations outside for extended or partial periods. This dermal harm, according to the research, is enduring, cannot be undone, and intensifies with every instance of exposure.
The previous week, Zarazua experienced sunburn, resulting in a fever the subsequent day, and on that occasion, she had neglected to use sun protection, despite it being her typical practice.
She informed BBC Sport that the application of suncream “can occasionally be bothersome due to its oily consistency, and if you get some on your arm, your grip becomes too slick, making it impossible to perform”.
She further stated, “Consequently, I sometimes opt for long sleeves and leggings to prevent such issues. With a small amount of lotion, I perceive my hold as compromised, and a steady grip is essential for executing a forehand or a serve.”
She remarked, “While additional sunblock can be put on during a match, the problem then becomes what to do with your hands? There isn’t a washing station available to clean them with soap.”
Cameron Norrie, from Britain, applies a robust zinc-based sun cream to his face – a variety known for leaving a pale streak but offering resistance to perspiration.
He communicated to BBC Sport, “It doesn’t look particularly appealing – somewhat akin to a cricket player – but it remains my sole method for extended protection.”
Drawing from their personal histories, Roddick and Evert have implored present-day athletes, both developing and professional, to adopt stringent measures against sun exposure, advocating for the consistent application of sun lotion, wearing of hats, and eye protection.
Maya Joint, a consistent wearer of shades, commended the event organizers for their “excellent efforts” in providing accessible sun protection, noting that the circuits also feature regulations designed to assist competitors in warm and moist environments.
Recently implemented regulations concerning high temperatures by the men’s ATP tour, mirroring existing WTA guidelines, will permit 10-minute intermissions during contests held in severely hot weather, starting this season.
Joint commented, “I believe many of the competitors are managing effectively in terms of [safeguarding themselves from the sun].”
She added, “Nonetheless, I am aware of a few individuals who would likely benefit from increased use of sunblock.”
