On various social media channels, Teofimo Lopez engaged his fanbase by posing a query: Who would they prefer to see him compete against next – Richardson Hitchins or Shakur Stevenson? The response was largely in favor of a showdown with Shakur, whom the fans viewed as the more compelling matchup.
Should Teofimo act on the preference expressed by his followers, his next opponent would be Shakur, rather than Hitchins. It’s important to note, however, that both potential fights are contingent upon external factors, specifically the involvement of Turki Alalshikh. Speculation is growing amongst fans that Turki may have distanced himself from Lopez following Lopez’s recent decision to withdraw from his scheduled bout with Devin Haney. If Turki doesn’t provide financial backing, the likelihood of fights involving Lopez, Shakur, and Hitchins diminishes significantly.
Hitchins Urges Teofimo to Make an Offer
Earlier today, IBF light welterweight titleholder Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) publicly stated his desire to face Teofimo next, with a subsequent match against Devin Haney as his following objective. He emphatically requested Lopez to “Send the contract.”
Richardson’s Recognition Limited to Dedicated Fans
Hitchins has been actively seeking a fight with Lopez for more than a year. While Hitchins has recently acquired a title, solidifying his position, his public profile and competitive record are not particularly impressive. Outside of boxing enthusiasts, he isn’t well-known because he needs more high-caliber victories. While knowledgeable fans recognize Richardson, he hasn’t yet captured the attention of the more general audience.
His most notable win is over George Kambosos Jr; that’s not enough. Hitchins has apparently avoided challenges like Subriel Matias, Gary Antuanne Russell, or Alberto Puello, all of which could have enhanced his image. If he wasn’t hesitant to fight them, Hitchins wouldn’t have to pursue a fight with Teofimo because he could easily secure matches with any of those three.
