TGL 2026: Woods & McIlroy’s League Begins Year 2 with High Expectations

The TGL commences its second season before the year concludes, carrying elevated optimism and expectations for the initiative. Led by golf icons Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, this simulated golf competition, an abbreviation for the TMRW Golf League, will feature 15 regular-season contests involving six different teams over a three-month period.

The SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, will continue as the venue, with all 15 matches and the subsequent playoffs broadcast nationally during the same time slots as its inaugural year. However, the entire calendar is not identical. The Presidents Day triple-header, which gained significant attention last year, has been removed. A key matchup between Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club and McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf is scheduled for Sunday, March 1, immediately following the conclusion of the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic, also held in the same city.

The postseason events are slated for the weeks immediately following The Tour Championship, allowing TGL to conclude its activities before the PGA Tour’s major championship season begins in earnest.

Let’s delve into what TGL has planned for 2026, including its operational rules and the composition of its competing teams.

TGL Match Structure

TGL competitions unfold over 15 holes, divided into two distinct segments. Participants execute full-swing shots from platforms simulating grass, rough, or sand, aiming towards a large simulator screen. Short-game plays from within 50 yards and putting take place on an adaptive, rotating green located within the SoFi Center.

Holes 1-9 – Triples (Alternate Shot, 3 vs. 3): Two teams, each composed of three players, compete. A three-person rotation takes turns hitting shots for their respective teams. This sequence continues until each hole is finished.

Holes 10-15 – Singles (One-on-One Play): One golfer from a team will face off against an opponent from the other team on a specific hole. All three players will participate in a single hole individually before the rotation recommences for holes 13-15.

Tiebreaker: A 3 vs. 3 closest-to-the-pin challenge.

Points System: Each individual hole is assigned a single point. Tied holes result in zero points for both sides. Points do not carry over to subsequent holes.

The “Hammer” Rule: A hole in a TGL match is typically worth one point, unless a team chooses to deploy the “hammer” (a metaphorical term, not a physical object), represented by a yellow weighted flag, which doubles the point value for that particular hole. A team can either agree to the hammer, playing the hole for two points, or decline it, thereby forfeiting the hole. Every team is allocated three hammers for use throughout the match.

Time Limit for Shots: Golfers must complete their shots within 40 seconds, or they will incur a one-stroke penalty.

Strategic Pauses: Each team is allotted four timeouts per match – two for the Triples segment and two for the Singles segment. Unused timeouts do not transfer between sessions.
