The Dragons successfully moved from the bottom position of the URC standings after ending their 15-month winless streak in the league with an emphatic 48-28 victory over Connacht on Saturday.
During an unforgettable evening at Rodney Parade, the Dragons elevated their game to a standard unseen in years. This marked their initial triumph since defeating Ospreys on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 season, their primary try-bonus point win in the URC since their Judgement Day success against Scarlets in April 2023, and the first occasion they secured consecutive wins in over four years, following their victory against Lyon in the European Challenge Cup the preceding week.
Hooker Oli Burrows, scrum-half Che Hope, and wing Jared Rosser all scored tries before a penalty try contributed to a 28-7 lead at half-time.
Two penalties from Angus O’Brien followed, prior to Rio Dyer and Che Hope adding further scores, sending the 4,188 spectators home content.
“We are pleased with a truly strong display,” remarked head coach Filo Tiatia. “The players performed with significantly more freedom this evening, which is gratifying, stemming from our analysis of how we aimed to play. They executed effectively.
“The final 20 minutes is likely a point for discussion, specifically how we maintain focus even when circumstances shift, so there remain areas for development. But generally, truly delighted for the squad.
“We are striving to cultivate a style of play that supporters wish to witness, securing victories, and this forms an integral part of the progression.
“We are cultivating confidence in what we endeavor to accomplish collaboratively, especially when exhaustion sets in. That represents the psychological aspect of the sport, and we possess numerous young individuals who lack specific aptitudes.
“It’s truly about remaining present in key moments, which they achieved tonight.”
The Dragons are scheduled to play Cardiff Rugby on Boxing Day before hosting Scarlets on New Year’s Day, aiming to build upon their consecutive wins.
