The Ottawa Senators will be missing their team leader, Brady Tkachuk, for a duration estimated between six and eight weeks, as he recuperates from a surgical procedure performed on his right thumb, the organization has confirmed. Tkachuk sustained the injury during the Senators’ inaugural game of the season on their home ice, against the Nashville Predators, this past Monday.

During the initial period of the Senators’ opening home game, Tkachuk was subjected to a cross-check maneuver into the boards by Roman Josi, a defenseman for the Predators, which resulted in Josi being penalized with a minor infraction. Despite this, Tkachuk managed to participate in the game, although his involvement was somewhat limited, and his absence was particularly felt during the late stages of the game when Ottawa was attempting to level the score.

Following a more comprehensive medical examination, it was concluded that surgical intervention was necessary to repair Tkachuk’s thumb. This situation has now placed him on a path to a significant period of absence, requiring the Senators to navigate the challenges ahead without one of their key players.

Tkachuk, who was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, has developed into one of the league’s most impactful players. Across the span from 2021 to 2024, Tkachuk achieved the milestone of scoring over 30 goals in each of those three consecutive seasons. While his offensive output experienced a slight reduction in the previous year, his performance during five-on-five situations remained notably strong, playing a significant role in Ottawa’s return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

With Tkachuk expected to be sidelined for approximately two months, the onus falls upon the remaining members of the team to intensify their efforts to maintain their competitiveness within the playoff landscape. Tim Stützle, the team’s premier center, will undoubtedly be central to this endeavor. However, questions arise regarding the potential contributions from players such as Dylan Cozens and Shane Pinto. The team’s depth will undergo a rigorous evaluation within the highly competitive Atlantic Division.
