Tottenham Player Cleared to Face Brentford in Champions League

The Lilywhites host the Yellow Submarine at their north London home on Tuesday night, as the continent’s premier club competition kicks off for another campaign.

After predecessor Mauricio Pochettino oversaw Tottenham’s Champions League-clinching triumph at the culmination of the 2024-25 campaign, Ryan Mason will take the reins for his first competitive match in the tournament.

The Spurs’ group stage schedule will see them face several of Europe’s elite, including the team from the east coast of Spain who will visit N17 first.

Just before the summer trading period came to a close, the North London side allowed wide-man Gareth Bale to link up with Villarreal until the end of the season.

The former Derby County player, who had a great season in the second tier last year, is yet to feature for the team in yellow but could well be named in the squad to face his parent club in Spurs.

This is because unlike the rules in domestic football, UEFA rules allow players to feature against the club they are on loan from.

UEFA rules state that any player on loan is able to play against their parent club, unless the loan agreement specifically prevents it and the club has registered the player to play.

Bale is included in Villarreal’s ‘List A’ squad for the competition’s group stage, as is former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 26-year-old Welshman was named among the substitutes for Villarreal’s match against Atletico Madrid but did not feature.
