Amidst the uproar regarding statements directed at her by Jelena Ostapenko, Taylor Townsend delivered a shocking defeat to fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva, securing her spot in the US Open’s round of 16.
The American player, aged 29, characterized her 7-5, 6-2 victory over the Russian competitor as transcending her own personal achievement, marking her first advance to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows since 2019.
This week saw Townsend receive support from fellow athletes, including Naomi Osaka, following Ostapenko’s remarks after their Wednesday second-round match, where Ostapenko allegedly stated that Townsend had “no education” and “no class.”
Osaka expressed that such remarks were “one of the most hurtful things you could say to a black tennis player.”
Ostapenko engaged in a dispute with Townsend after a 7-5, 6-1 defeat, asserting that the American doubles specialist had failed to apologize when a net cord fell in her favor.
The 2017 French Open victor refuted any implications of racism in her comments, and Townsend stated she did not perceive any racial prejudice in the Latvian player’s words.
After securing a significant victory in her singles career against Andreeva on Friday, Townsend addressed the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, expressing, “This feels good.”
She continued, “All I’m going to say is welcome to the show. I feel amazing. I’m really just proud that I kept the main thing the main thing.”
“I want to say thank you to everyone who supported me over these last 48 hours.”
“It’s bigger than me. It’s about the message, it’s about the representation, it’s about being bold and being able to show up as yourself and I did that tonight.”
“You guys saw the real Taylor Townsend tonight.”
Townsend, who is scheduled to compete against unseeded Barbora Krejcikova in the fourth round on Sunday, required only 76 minutes under the stadium lights to overcome 18-year-old Andreeva with a series of audacious shots.
After navigating a closely contested first set, she dominated the second set, delivering a total of 23 winning shots.
