Despite not being cleared for active play with the Washington Wizards, Trae Young found himself expelled from the game on Monday evening.
During the Wizards’ 123-118 defeat against the Houston Rockets on Monday, Young was removed from the arena after stepping onto the playing surface and voicing his disapproval to an official. He was sidelined for the matchup and is scheduled to commence his tenure with Washington this week, following his trade acquisition last month.
The altercation commenced in the third quarter at Capital One Arena when Tari Eason forcibly pushed Jamir Watkins to the floor while the Rockets advanced the ball. The unprovoked shove immediately triggered a significant on-court confrontation.
Teammates and coaching staff promptly separated the individuals involved, preventing further escalation. However, Young, dressed in street attire, emerged from the bench area and began arguing with the baseline official, which led to his mandatory removal from the game.
Eason also incurred a pair of technical fouls, resulting in his expulsion. Watkins and Sharife Cooper were each assessed a single technical foul for their reactions to the situation.
Young has been sidelined since December 27th due to sustained knee and quadriceps ailments. His participation this season has been limited to just ten contests, where he has maintained averages of 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game. Washington secured Young’s services in January through a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, sending CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert in return. Young is slated to play his first game for the Wizards on Thursday when they face the Utah Jazz.
Following the contest, Young appeared to accept his expulsion with composure.
The Rockets comfortably secured their victory, notwithstanding the second-half commotion and a late surge by Washington. Alperen Şengün was the leading scorer with 32 points and 12 boards, complemented by Kevin Durant’s 30 points. Houston’s field goal percentage approached 50%, and they dominated the boards with 59 rebounds compared to Washington’s 27. This result improved Houston’s seasonal record to 38-22.
Bilal Coulibaly paced the Wizards’ scoring with 23 points, while Cooper contributed 21 points as a reserve. Despite their overall difficulties, the Wizards demonstrated strong perimeter shooting, converting 19 of 35 attempts from three-point range. Following Monday’s defeat, their fifth consecutive loss, Washington’s record stands at a dismal 16-44. The team is effectively eliminated from playoff contention as the regular season nears its conclusion.
Though he has yet to register any points while wearing a Wizards uniform – a feat expected on Thursday – Young has already accumulated an ejection. This event, while perhaps not perfect, marks the commencement of his journey with the Washington franchise.
