Trent McDuffie has secured a new contract.
Following his substantial trade to the Los Angeles Rams from the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this week, McDuffie finalized a four-year, $124 million contract extension with the Rams on Sunday, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
This agreement establishes McDuffie as the most generously compensated cornerback in NFL history, with an annual salary of $31 million, marginally exceeding the $30.1 million paid to Sauce Gardner by the Indianapolis Colts. Furthermore, McDuffie’s contract includes $100 million in guaranteed funds.
In return for McDuffie, the Rams transferred four draft selections to the Chiefs on Wednesday, specifically encompassing the 29th overall pick along with a fifth and sixth-round choice in the upcoming draft. Last season, McDuffie played in 13 games, accumulating 63 tackles, one sack, and an interception. His season concluded prematurely due to a knee ailment.
The Chiefs originally drafted McDuffie as the 21st overall pick from Washington in 2022. He recorded a personal best of 80 tackles during the 2023 season, and in 2024, he amassed 59 tackles alongside two interceptions.
Despite not completing a full season last year, McDuffie had thoroughly established himself as an elite cornerback in the NFL during his rookie agreement. With his initial contract nearing its conclusion this autumn — the Chiefs having activated the fifth-year option on his rookie deal last spring, positioning him to play this season on a guaranteed $13.6 million — a new deal or a move to free agency appeared unavoidable. The Chiefs chose to capitalize on his value and part ways after a year where they failed to reach the playoffs, breaking a streak of over ten years.
The Rams were evidently prepared to invest significantly in McDuffie and relinquish numerous draft assets to acquire him, envisioning a Super Bowl appearance next season. He is expected to offer a substantial enhancement to their defensive unit for the foreseeable future, building upon a strong performance where the Rams ranked 10th in points conceded. Last season, the Rams finished 12-5 and advanced to the NFC championship game, where they were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks.
