Trey Hendrickson Reports to Camp, Contract Status Unchanged

The Cincinnati Bengals and their prominent defensive end, Trey Hendrickson, continue to be a focal point of discussion leading up to the season due to his contract situation. Hendrickson has publicly stated his desire for an updated contract for quite some time, yet negotiations with the team have seemingly stalled.

The situation appeared to escalate in late July when Hendrickson returned to his home in Florida on the designated reporting day for Bengals training camp. However, Hendrickson reversed course, joining the team just over a week later.

If one assumed this meant Hendrickson and the Bengals were close to announcing a lucrative new contract for the All-Pro player, that assumption would be incorrect. Hendrickson stated on Wednesday that his contract situation remained “exactly the same” despite his return to the team.

Hendrickson clarified that his decision to participate in training camp was motivated by a desire to avoid becoming a distraction for his teammates.

“I aim to assist the individuals who have supported me throughout my career. Demario Davis, Cam Jordan, and even Sam Hubbard provided significant assistance during my tenure here. Currently, I believe that fulfilling that role is paramount. This [contract] discussion will naturally resolve itself as we move forward into the season.”

This update isn’t particularly encouraging, although Hendrickson’s suggestion that things will “resolve” themselves might provide some hope for Bengals fans eager for a positive resolution.

Hendrickson, 30, is looking for a new contract after topping the league with 17.5 sacks the previous season. This accomplishment led to his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection and his first All-Pro team selection. He also finished second in the voting for Defensive Player of the Year.

After signing a four-year, $60 million contract with the Bengals in 2021, Hendrickson is entering the final year of his contract. He is scheduled to earn $18.6 million in 2025 and will become a free agent or be eligible for the franchise tag if he is unable to reach a new agreement with the Bengals before the season concludes.
