The head coach of Exeter Chiefs, Rob Baxter, is anxiously awaiting updates regarding the foot injury sustained by Christ Tshiunza, the Welsh international, during the recent match against Northampton Saints.
Baxter expresses concern that Tshiunza’s situation might mirror a previous instance where he fractured his foot against Sale Sharks in his initial appearance for the Chiefs following his return from the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The imposing 6ft 6in back-rower was sidelined for five months due to that injury. The club is currently awaiting a thorough evaluation of the injury incurred in the first half of the 33-33 draw at Franklin’s Gardens, although Ethan Roots is expected to return to the squad.
“He was substituted at half-time due to a minor foot issue, and we are still in the process of determining the exact nature of the problem, but Ethan Roots should be available,” he stated.
Baxter also verified that England winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, who scored two tries against the Saints before being taken off, was only experiencing cramps.
“It was merely cramp. To be honest, Manny didn’t participate in many rugby matches last season. Following his international duties, he had a break, resulting in a shortened pre-season.
“During pre-season, he also encountered a slight issue, which limited his training intensity. He was considered fit for the Bath game but was with England, and we hesitated to include him with only one day of training.
“Ultimately, considering everything, I believe he performed exceptionally well and showed great endurance. The game involved a significant amount of running and numerous high-speed actions from him.
“It was simply a case of cramp, and he primarily needs to accumulate game time to build stamina in his legs. He poses a significant attacking threat. It was wonderful to see him back on the field and completing the 80 minutes,” Baxter added.
Additionally, Baxter confirmed that Wallabies players Len Ikitau and Tom Hooper are scheduled to arrive in Devon next week following the Bledisloe Cup match against the All Blacks this weekend.
Ikitau will arrive first and might play against the Bristol Bears next weekend, while Hooper is expected to make his debut against Harlequins the following week.
“Hopefully, Len Ikitau and Tom Hooper will come through this weekend’s match without any issues, and they will arrive at different times next week, which will enhance our squad options.
“We are beginning to resemble a complete squad. Lenny might be a possible inclusion for next week, as he will arrive earlier in the week than Tom.
“Tom will not be available for next week, but he will be available the week after. Both of them should be available for the week after.”
