The English national team concluded their World Cup 2026 qualifying journey with a 2-0 victory over Albania in Tirana.
This marked the end of a group stage where England emerged victorious in all eight of their matches without allowing any goals, setting a positive tone for their upcoming World Cup preparations.
Jude Bellingham was replaced by Morgan Rogers late in the game in Albania
Bellingham showcased his abilities to the England supporters and the international manager before being substituted for Rogers after Harry Kane’s second goal extended England’s lead to two. The 22-year-old displayed visible disappointment at being taken off.
“He is not happy about it,” Tuchel mentioned in his post-match interview with Gabriel Clarke, the ITV Football reporter. “No one is pleased about it. That is how it goes. Morgan would not have wanted to come off either and did not warrant being taken off.
“It was my decision. Jude had also been given a yellow card, so we made the call prior to the second goal, and we are sticking with it.”
Bellingham’s caution was very likely an element of the explanation behind the substitution. Tuchel clarified that a suspension at the World Cup, similar to that of Cristiano Ronaldo, was undesirable, and Bellingham seemed agitated after receiving a yellow card.
Rogers’ performances for England thus far have provided a viable alternative to Bellingham, but the possibility of the Villa player replacing his teammate in the starting lineup at the World Cup appears unlikely.
England had to exercise patience to overcome Albania’s resilience, with the home side demonstrating tenacity in defense despite the early exit of Elseid Hysaj, and launching counter-attacks against England, though their finishing lacked precision.
Tuchel expressed satisfaction with the unique nature of the challenge and England’s capability to respond effectively.
“Good game, I am pleased,” he said to Clarke. “The Serbia game was tough. Today was challenging. The game got intense – We were completely in control and then lost it somewhat. We had to deal with some difficult periods and with an environment like this one, and we possessed the ability to wrap up the match.”
Tuchel’s journey in Group K began at a measured pace but ended on a high note with a string of impressive displays that offered a glimpse into England’s resolve, excellence, squad depth and versatility as they head into next summer’s World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
England was victorious in all eight of their matches, accumulating the maximum of 24 points. They found the net 22 times – with eight goals attributed to team captain Kane – and did not concede a single goal.
Albania had previously guaranteed their position in second place, finishing the group ten points behind the Three Lions.
Sylvinho’s squad still retain an opportunity to secure qualification for their inaugural World Cup finals through the play-offs. The draw on Thursday will reveal the identity of their semi-final opponents.
