The University of Connecticut has selected Jason Candle from Toledo to lead its football program, filling the vacancy left by Jim Mora’s departure for Colorado State.
Candle has committed to a six-year contract, extending through the 2031 season. His official introduction is scheduled for a press conference on Monday.
During his decade-long tenure at Toledo, Candle achieved a record of 81-44, securing two MAC championships. His head coaching debut also saw the Rockets triumph in the Boca Raton Bowl during the 2015 season. This year, Toledo posted an 8-4 record and awaits its bowl game invitation.
“It is a privilege to be appointed as the head football coach at the University of Connecticut,” Candle expressed in a statement. “UConn is a highly regarded university, and I am thankful to David Benedict and the leadership for placing their trust in me. My family and I are eager to become part of the Husky community in Storrs. UConn possesses all necessary components for achievement — exceptional resources, dedicated supporters, and a dedication to superior performance. I am eager to advance the existing positive energy and cultivate a program that fosters young men of strong moral principles and instills pride in our fans and alumni. I am excited to collaborate with our student-athletes and staff. Go Huskies!”
Sources indicate that the 46-year-old Candle has been UConn’s primary candidate since the commencement of their search, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Mora departs after consecutive nine-win seasons at UConn, a feat not witnessed since 2007. Under Mora’s guidance, UConn reached three bowl games in his four-year tenure, a significant improvement compared to the single bowl appearance in the preceding 11 seasons.
UConn’s 2025 season (9-3) featured a 2-1 record against ACC opponents, securing victories against Duke and Boston College. Notably, UConn did not suffer any losses within regulation time, as all three defeats occurred in overtime.
