Eli Snyman, the Benetton lock yet to earn an international cap, has committed to a two-year agreement with Ulster, transferring from one URC team to another, with his contract extending through summer 2028.

This Zimbabwean-born forward, aged 29, stands impressively at 2.01 meters and weighs 111 kilograms. His early career saw him representing Zimbabwe in age-group rugby before his enrollment in the Blue Bulls’ junior development program in South Africa. Subsequently, he competed for the Bulls in both Super Rugby and the Currie Cup prior to his move to Benetton in 2019.

Following a notable period with the Italian club, Snyman transitioned to the English Premiership outfit, Leicester Tigers, in 2021. He participated in half of the league matches during their victorious 2022 Premiership season. It was during his tenure with the Tigers that Snyman registered his first try in professional senior rugby, scored against Saracens.

Snyman returned to Benetton in 2023, where, in his inaugural season back with the green and white jersey, he received his singular career red card in a match against Edinburgh.

With over a century of professional games to his credit, Snyman’s acquisition marks a successful initial transfer for Rory Best, who is clearly pleased, just two months into his tenure as Ulster’s General Manager.

“We are extremely pleased to have finalized Eli’s commitment for the upcoming two seasons. He possesses a remarkably powerful and distinct physical makeup, and at 29, he is undoubtedly in the prime of his professional journey,” commented the ex-Ireland and Ulster hooker.

“Our squad includes several promising young locks who stand to benefit immensely from his guidance and the extensive experience he has amassed throughout his playing career.

“I am confident that our fans will share my enthusiasm in witnessing the decisive influence and commanding stature he will contribute to our forward unit, as we aim to compete strongly in both the URC and European tournaments.”

Regarding his upcoming transfer, Snyman stated: “I am absolutely thrilled and profoundly thankful for the opportunity to become part of Ulster Rugby this summer, and I eagerly anticipate encountering my new colleagues, the coaching team, and the Ulster fan base.”

“This represents an incredible chance for me to link up with a squad that has showcased some of the most engaging rugby in the URC during the current season. Observing the team’s achievements has genuinely invigorated me about contributing to the developments taking shape here.”

“During my discussions with Rory Best, he presented a distinct strategic outlook for the next few years and elaborated on how my expertise could enhance a highly gifted cohort of emerging Irish forwards.”

“To the loyal Ulster fans, I eagerly await the chance to meet all of you shortly and integrate into the wider Ulster Rugby community.”
