USMNT’s Patrick Agyemang misses World Cup with Achilles injury

U.S. national team member Patrick Agyemang is slated to miss the upcoming World Cup on home soil, having sustained a significant Achilles tendon injury.

Agyemang’s distress was clear as he was carried off the field, his right leg immobilized, following an awkward landing during Derby’s 2-0 triumph over Stoke in England’s second-tier Championship league on Monday.

On Tuesday, Derby confirmed that their forward would not be participating in the world’s premier football competition, scheduled for June and July across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Derby released a statement indicating that “due to this injury, Patrick will regrettably be absent from this summer’s FIFA World Cup,” and emphasized that “it would be inappropriate to predict a recovery timeframe at this point.”

The club additionally mentioned that Agyemang was scheduled for further medical evaluations later on Tuesday, with “subsequent updates to be shared when available.”

The 25-year-old Agyemang has been instrumental in Derby’s push for promotion to the Premier League, leading the team with 10 goals since his arrival last summer from MLS club Charlotte FC.

During the most recent period for international matches, he appeared as a substitute for the United States, scoring a goal in a match lost to Belgium, and also saw playing time against Portugal.
