Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., previously a student at the University of Virginia, has been handed a life sentence this Friday in connection with the 2022 shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of three UVA football players and injuries to two other students.
According to WRIC in Charlottesville, Jones, who is now 26 years old, was given a life sentence for each of the three counts of first-degree murder he was charged with, as well as for each of the two counts of aggravated malicious wounding.
Those five life sentences are scheduled to be served one after the other.
On November 13, 2022, Jones discharged a firearm on a bus filled with students in a parking garage located on the university’s grounds. This occurred after a class field trip to Washington, D.C., where the students had attended a performance of the play “The Ballad of Emmett Till.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were killed as a result. All three were part of UVA’s football team for the year 2022. Mike Hollins, a running back, and Marlee Morgan, another student, sustained injuries.
Although Jones was listed as a freshman running back from Petersburg, Virginia, on the 2018 football roster, he never participated in any games for the team. He was not affiliated with the football program at the time the shooting occurred.
During his address to the families of the victims in court on Friday, Jones stated that he was not acquainted with Chandler, Davis, and Perry.
According to CVille Right Now, he expressed, “I didn’t know your sons. I didn’t know your boys. And I wish I did.”
Jones further added: “I’m so sorry. I caused so much pain.”
The defense team brought forward witnesses to discuss Jones’ difficult upbringing and the deterioration of his mental health in the years leading up to the shooting.
WTVR-TV reported that Jones’ relatives testified about the verbal and physical abuse he endured from his parents during his childhood. Jones’ uncle noted that by the summer of 2022, Jones had become “more paranoid.” Jones’ cousin recounted instances of him constantly looking over his shoulder and expressing concerns that people were lurking around the corner, intending to harm him, as reported by WTVR-TV.
During the cross-examination, the commonwealth’s attorney referenced a text message Jones had sent to a fraternity brother, who had been called as a witness by the defense. According to CVille Right Now, the text suggested that Jones threatened violence against co-workers, whom he suspected of stalking him.
Jones entered a guilty plea the previous year. As part of the plea agreement he signed, he was facing a minimum of 23 years in prison, according to The Washington Post. The prosecution advocated for a life sentence.
In the end, Jones was given the maximum punishment of five life sentences.
