Unexpectedly, Max Verstappen secured his fifth pole-position of the current Formula 1 season at the very circuit where he had previously characterized the Red Bull vehicle as “a monster” just a year prior.
The question arises: How have Verstappen and the team based in Milton Keynes managed to tame this supposed monster and achieve the quickest lap ever recorded in F1 history?
“We have clearly gained knowledge and understanding since the previous year,” Verstappen responded when questioned by Autosport. “The vehicle is significantly different from last year’s model, although this season we have still encountered numerous difficulties with the vehicle’s equilibrium. Consequently, the extent of the vehicle’s performance here remained somewhat uncertain.
“However, on Friday, I felt more at ease with the equilibrium than usual, and I believe we now possess a greater understanding of how to configure the vehicle. This enables us to implement minor adjustments after each session, rather than having to make extensive alterations throughout the weekend. This has undoubtedly been beneficial to me in qualifying.”
Insights from Zandvoort Applied
When Verstappen mentions a more favorable Friday, he struggles to recall the last instance where he felt so at ease in the Red Bull vehicle during practice: “It has been quite some time. Additionally, the fact that we have only made minor modifications throughout the weekend is also something that hasn’t occurred in a while.”
According to Verstappen, this enhanced set-up approach is more crucial to Red Bull’s Saturday triumph than the recently introduced floor upgrade.

“I believe we acquired considerable knowledge regarding this year’s vehicle in Zandvoort, and I am hopeful that we can utilize that understanding for the remainder of the season,“ he stated. “Naturally, I must acknowledge that our vehicle performs somewhat better on tracks with medium and low downforce, primarily because we consistently encounter considerable understeer in the middle of the turns. This is something that can be managed more effectively around this particular track.”
Did Verstappen’s Configuration Choices Contribute to Monza Pole?
Beyond the insights gained from Zandvoort, another significant element has emerged in Monza: Verstappen himself advocated for the final set-up decisions leading up to qualifying. This is precisely what his radio communication following qualifying – “It worked! Relax there, it’s all good” – alluded to.
“Prior to qualifying, certain individuals within the team expressed a desire to explore an alternative set-up, but I countered, ‘No, we should refrain from doing that,’” Verstappen stated. “As I walked back to my room, I could still perceive some hesitant expressions and a few individuals questioning that set-up strategy. However, I simply felt, ‘this is what we need to do,’ and fortunately, it proved successful.”
When it was suggested that the ultimate decision was more his than the team’s, Verstappen elaborated during the Dutch media briefing: “Well, ultimately, these decisions are made collectively with multiple individuals, including GP [Gianpiero Lambiase] and several others in my vicinity.
“Of course, I also comprehend the rationale behind certain inquiries and why some individuals might have preferred a different trajectory. However, in the end, I am the one operating the vehicle and experiencing particular sensations. I felt that we only needed to implement a few minor adjustments, and that it would subsequently improve.”

Superior Top Speed Compared to McLaren?
It proved successful – although Verstappen was still required to deliver an exceptional Q3 lap.
“In both of my Q3 laps, I avoided any major errors,“ he stated. “This is always quite challenging to achieve on this particular track. Decelerating from such elevated velocities into these two chicanes is not invariably straightforward in terms of accurately hitting the apex, but today everything coalesced.”
Furthermore, Verstappen possessed a marginal top speed advantage over McLaren, which could potentially prove beneficial during the race as well: “I believe I possess slightly more top speed, but ultimately, it is also necessary to navigate the corners expeditiously. They consistently demonstrate considerable proficiency in that regard, and they manage the tires more effectively than any other team. That remains a significant advantage for them, but I simply hope that our vehicle feels somewhat better and that I might have an opportunity to compete with them.”
