Vikings WR Justin Jefferson Ruled Out for Week 4 vs. Dolphins

Even though the Minnesota Vikings have experienced constant instability at the quarterback position recently, their standout pass-catcher Justin Jefferson has served as a reliable anchor for the offense ever since being selected with the 22nd pick out of LSU in the 2020 draft.

Over his initial six complete years in the league, the four-time All-Pro selection suited up for all of Minnesota’s regular-season matchups in five of those campaigns.

The star receiver’s streak of availability was put in jeopardy during last week’s 23-16 victory away against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he sustained a sprained left ankle on the opening possession of the matchup.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that the 27-year-old target escaped a severe, multi-week injury, but he has nevertheless been sidelined for the upcoming home matchup on Sunday against a transitioning Miami Dolphins squad.

This marks the first contest Jefferson will sit out since the 2023 season, a year in which a hamstring strain forced him to miss seven consecutive games.

Even though he sat out most of Minnesota’s Week 3 triumph over Tampa Bay, Jefferson remains the team’s leading receiver with 179 yards. He accumulated these numbers across 13 catches, finding the end zone on two of those plays.

The talented wideout is currently chasing his seventh straight season with at least 1,000 receiving yards. Back in 2022, he dominated the league with a chart-topping 128 receptions and a league-high 1,809 yards through the air, a historic performance that secured him the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

Minnesota remains optimistic that their starting quarterback for 2026, Kyler Murray, can fully unlock Jefferson’s playmaking abilities. Due to a concussion Murray suffered early in Week 1 combined with Jefferson’s current ankle setback, the duo has shared very little playing time together this year.

Nonetheless, they offered a glimpse of their potential chemistry last week in Tampa. Jefferson caught a 22-yard pass on the game’s opening snap, and later took a screen pass for a 10-yard gain—the very play on which he got injured—to help set up a 54-yard field goal by Will Reichard.

Without his top receiver on the field, Murray delivered a somewhat inconsistent performance, though he did connect on several impressive passes with fourth-year receiver Jordan Addison, including a 41-yard touchdown strike during the second period.

On the bright side for the undefeated 3-0 Vikings, they are scheduled to face a Miami pass defense that has foundered over the first three games. Indeed, the Dolphins are currently allowing a league-worst 9.1 net yards per pass attempt.

Following this matchup, Minnesota is set to travel to New Orleans to face the Saints in Week 5, which will be followed by their scheduled bye week in Week 6.
