Waqar Younis on Jasprit Bumrah vs. Wasim Akram.

The realm of cricket discussion has been set abuzz by Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer now known for his insightful commentary. Chopra shared an exceptional viewpoint on Jasprit Bumrah’s abilities, attributed to none other than the esteemed Pakistani bowling icon, Waqar Younis. According to Chopra, Younis regards the Indian fast bowler as unparalleled, the best the sport has ever witnessed.

Jasprit Bumrah: A bowler beyond comparison

Chopra narrated an open exchange with Waqar, in which he inquired about a comparison between Bumrah and the legendary Wasim Akram. “I asked him, ‘The entire cricket community holds Wasim Akram in high regard for his bowling variations and his exceptional control. He was truly outstanding. Is Bumrah like a right-handed version of Wasim Akram?’” Chopra revealed on his digital platform.

Younis’s answer, however, exceeded expectations: “No, he surpasses all of us. We didn’t possess his level of understanding at his age. His skill is superior, his comprehension is superior. He is the finest bowler the world has ever encountered.” Such significant praise from a luminary like Waqar emphasizes Bumrah’s distinctive aptitude, especially following his noteworthy performance in the recently concluded bilateral series, where he claimed 14 wickets across three games.

Regardless of such impressive acknowledgments, Bumrah has faced some observation, particularly concerning how his playing time is handled. Chopra emphasized that the right-arm bowler has intentionally reduced his appearances, participating in just three games in a recent series, a tactic intended to lower the chances of injuries. This strategy has, surprisingly, sparked disapproval among certain fans.

Chopra also addressed prior conversations surrounding Bumrah’s potential to lead the team, mentioning, “There were questions about why bowlers couldn’t be captains, especially since he served as vice-captain under Rohit Sharma and successfully led the team in Perth, securing a victory. The suggestion was for him to become the captain.” He conveyed his disappointment at the change in public opinion, stating, “From Boom Boom Bumrah, our followers have become misled. I am quite taken aback and saddened.”

Chopra strongly defended Bumrah, restating his position as a “once-in-a-generation talent” who “outshines everyone else.” He affirmed Bumrah’s unmatched position in today’s cricket scene. “He currently holds the title of the best bowler worldwide across all formats,” Chopra declared. He also passionately supported giving importance to managing workload, irrespective of how fans feel. “If Bumrah’s schedule involves playing only three games, then so be it. If the plan to manage his workload allows him to participate in crucial matches without risking injury, I am in full agreement,” Chopra concluded, highlighting the importance of safeguarding such a unique asset for Indian cricket’s future.
