According to Ollie Watkins, he found it necessary to rouse his Aston Villa colleagues at the interval during their 3-1 first-leg Europa League quarterfinal triumph against Bologna on Thursday.
Aston Villa endured intense pressure from Bologna in the initial half, with Bologna seeing a Santiago Castro goal disallowed for offside and Lewis Ferguson hitting the woodwork; however, the English outfit maintained their composure, and Ezri Konsa headed the away team into the lead prior to halftime.
Following the restart, Watkins extended Villa’s advantage, and although Jonathan Rowe’s late effort appeared to reduce the gap for the upcoming second leg at Villa Park, Watkins’ goal in injury time re-established their two-goal cushion.
Bologna registered 19 attempts during the match and held superior possession, prompting the forward to acknowledge his team’s good fortune in leading at the halfway point.
“It was crucial,” he remarked. “In the first half, they subjected us to considerable pressure and controlled the play. We were fortunate; at halftime, I conveyed to the lads that our luck held and we needed to sharpen up.”
He continued, “They had a goal disallowed, and had that stood, making it 1-0, recovery would have been arduous because their performance was challenging today, so we were fortunate.”
Watkins elevated his total goals across all competitions this season to 12, positioning Villa favorably to reach a second European semifinal within the past three seasons.
He commented, “As the season nears its conclusion, we are eager; I feel capable of playing another 90 minutes right now. I anticipate the remaining fixtures with excitement. Facing them again next week, I am determined.”
He added, “That final goal eases the tension of the match, and with a two-goal advantage returning to Villa Park, we intend to present them with a formidable challenge. We must maintain our momentum; we are in a strong position.”
This outcome marked Aston Villa’s eighth consecutive victory in the Europa League, though manager Unai Emery acknowledged his team led a fortunate existence, especially in the opening segment.
He informed TNT Sports, “I am pleased, but finding equilibrium in all aspects of our first-leg performance, it stands as an excellent result. Reflecting on our 90-minute display, I have positive feelings about certain elements, yet reservations about others.”
He explained, “During the first half, we displayed some reticence. The scoreline at halftime was more favorable than our actual play, which wasn’t exceptional. The second half unfolded entirely differently. We began excellently, started to assert more dominance, and managed the game as we had initially intended for the first half but failed to execute.”
He concluded, “Just as we began to feel at ease in the contest, they netted a goal, but our response was superb with the final corner, and we found the back of the net.”
Aston Villa is now expected to be a clear favorite to advance when they host the Serie A team at Villa Park next week, though Emery emphasized that they would not assume anything.
He stated, “It remains an excellent outcome, but the second leg is still to be contested, and I recognize their threat due to their impressive competitive spirit.”
He continued, “In the return leg, they will attempt to overpower us. Naturally, my message to the team in the locker room is to approach the second leg according to our strategy, which will be a revised plan, all while maintaining respect for them.”
