Following his wrist injury, Isack Hadjar’s comeback behind the wheel of the Red Bull Racing RB22 took place at one of the most demanding circuits in Formula 1. The Baku City Circuit presents a high probability of accidents alongside highly technical sectors winding through the historic old town.
Tackling this venue demands immense self-assurance, which Hadjar possessed in abundance despite being sidelined for three grand prix weekends—demonstrating right after practice that his physical condition would not hold him back.
Securing a fourth-place start along the Caspian coast, Hadjar delivered an impeccable drive to secure his second podium finish of the year and his third overall in F1. His performance throughout the Baku weekend left a strong impression on Red Bull, as Laurent Mekies noted when speaking to journalists after the grand prix.
“What Isack achieved during this event was truly exceptional, absolutely remarkable,” remarked the Red Bull team boss. “Initially, our main concern was ensuring he felt comfortable in the cockpit without experiencing any discomfort. Over the past few weeks, we consistently agreed to hold off until Isack was completely fit, and that patience has clearly paid off.
“He drove pain-free throughout. Even so, returning to a track like this is highly challenging because it allows absolutely no room for mistakes.”
Fully cognizant of the high stakes, Hadjar took a measured approach, gradually finding his rhythm on one of the calendar’s most unforgiving temporary tracks.
“He progressively established his pace throughout each session with great composure and optimism,” Mekies went on to say. “Putting the car on the second row in fourth during qualifying was already a major achievement. Today, his competitive speed on both the medium and soft compounds was on a level we hadn’t witnessed previously.

“Thus, in his first weekend back, he has once again elevated his performance. We frequently remark on how he brought something extra to our operations with every track appearance during the season’s opening phase, and he is maintaining that momentum.”
Red Bull Praises Hadjar’s Composed Radio Interactions
Beyond his raw speed, Mekies was also highly impressed by how Hadjar handled himself during the opening phase of the race. When Red Bull instructed the young French driver to cede his position to Verstappen, Hadjar kept his cool, even as the reigning champion found it difficult to get performance out of the medium Pirelli compound.
“Furthermore, he drove incredibly smartly around Max and managed his rubber with great discipline,” Mekies noted. “This enabled fantastic collaboration between both competitors and our strategic unit, which in turn secured the optimal outcome for the team.”
This highlights the significant growth Hadjar is showing in his mental approach. While he occasionally gained a reputation for being emotional on the team radio during his junior career and rookie F1 campaign, his demeanor in Baku on Saturday was completely different.
Naturally, after a few laps, Hadjar inquired if he was permitted to mount an attack, prompting the pit wall to advise him to keep the battle clean. However, the dialogue before this moment was particularly revealing. When questioned about his potential pace in free air, he answered: “About two or three tenths faster, but I am perfectly comfortable staying here.”
Essentially, Hadjar was not demanding to regain the place, which optimized the overall race strategy for both competitors and bolstered Red Bull’s prospects. When Autosport questioned Mekies regarding this exact exchange, it was obvious that this maturity stood out above all else to the team boss.

“You are highlighting the exact details that offer a much clearer view of his development,” Mekies remarked.
“It demonstrates the intelligence of his racecraft, the mental bandwidth he can utilize while driving, and his impressive level of emotional maturity.
“These are clear signs of the progress he has achieved across the board, alongside finding extra pace. This upward path is precisely what has caught our attention since his arrival, and indeed throughout last year too.
“Because of this, we are committed to providing him with the ideal surroundings to foster his growth, as his progress has been incredibly striking.”
Creating those ideal conditions involved securing his future with a contract extension through 2027. Mekies admitted that Red Bull finalized the deal early to alleviate any external pressure on the youngster. Leaving the media scrum with a smile, Mekies concluded: “I think Isack certainly rewarded our trust today!”
