WNBA Fans Blast Atlanta Dream’s Response to Sophie Cunningham Shirt Controversy

Sunday’s matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream was clouded by allegations that security personnel at State Farm Arena compelled fans of Sophie Cunningham to conceal their clothing. A mother-daughter duo, who allegedly spent $1,000 per ticket, went to the matchup to root for the Fever guard and back her views regarding transgender participation in female sports.

On Monday, the Dream organization responded to the dispute, clarifying that no members of their staff were part of the choices made by WNBA security officers.

This public comment instantly sparked a fresh round of responses throughout the WNBA community.

The mother was dressed in an “XX/XY” t-shirt, and her daughter’s shirt bore the phrase “For the Girls” on the reverse. Based on their reports, arena staff confronted them prior to the overtime period and presented them with a choice: either hide their clothing or exit the venue.

Adam Francisco, a YouTuber who spoke with the two spectators, further asserted that another attendee wearing a “Protect Trans Rights” shirt was featured on the jumbotron before being instructed by security to cover up her message.

The franchise declared its dedication to maintaining a “safe and inclusive environment for everyone.” However, the team noted that the measures taken by “WNBA security fell short of that standard.”

This clarification did very little to pacify the rising public anger.

“Feeble and untruthful. You should be relegated to playing in a 5,000-seat venue,” an X user remarked.
