Gold medalist Zheng Qinwen is stepping away from the WTA circuit temporarily after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow.
The Chinese athlete, aged 22, was seeded fifth at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, but suffered a defeat in the opening round and mentioned that she had been “managing ongoing discomfort”.
“The road to recovery starts now,” the world number six shared on Instagram.
“In the coming weeks and months, my entire focus will be on rehabilitation – dedicating myself to coming back in better shape and with improved health.
“This is just a brief hiatus, and I view it as an essential measure for becoming a better player on the court.”
Zheng had the operation performed on Friday and expressed that she was “thankful to have completed it”.
