San Francisco’s NFL franchise has locked down head coach Kyle Shanahan with a new multiyear contract, according to Friday reports validated by ESPN.
While specific details of the agreement—initially disclosed by The Ringer—remain undisclosed, Shanahan’s previous commitment to San Francisco was set to run until the conclusion of the 2027 campaign.
Over the course of his decade-long tenure, Shanahan has accumulated an 83-67 record in regular-season play, directing the team to six postseason berths, which featured two unsuccessful Super Bowl appearances at the end of the 2019 and 2023 campaigns. Additionally, he has achieved double-digit victory totals in five separate seasons.
To kick off their 2026 campaign, the 49ers traveled to Australia and secured a dominant 27-7 win against the Los Angeles Rams.
Earlier this summer, Shanahan was involved in a serious automobile accident on July 14, resulting in multiple injuries that included a concussion, three fractured ribs, and a broken left hand.
The 46-year-old strategist was originally appointed as San Francisco’s head coach on February 6, 2017, and later finalized a multiyear extension in September 2023. By leading the team for just two more matchups, he will draw even with legendary coach Bill Walsh for the highest number of games helmed in franchise history.
From the time he assumed leadership in 2017, San Francisco has dominated the league in net yardage, outperforming their rivals by a total of 7,774 yards. This figure eclipses their nearest competitor, the Buffalo Bills (6,414 yards), by more than 1,300 yards.
