In San Diego on Monday night, Manny Machado achieved a significant milestone.
During the Padres’ 6-3 defeat against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Padres’ prominent player secured the 2,000th hit of his career. In the fourth inning, Machado officially reached this milestone with a single off Zac Gallen that just cleared shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and landed in left field.
As expected, this accomplishment resulted in a tremendous cheer at Petco Park.
Machado started the night needing two hits to reach the milestone. He also singled into left field in the first inning. Later, he followed up his historic hit with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Machado is now among the select five active players in Major League Baseball with at least 2,000 career hits, and the 297th player in league history. He is also only the 12th player to achieve 2,000 hits and 350 home runs by the age of 32. The home run on Monday marked the 357th of his career.
Machado currently has a total of 950 hits with the Padres, whom he joined as a free agent in 2019. This places him fifth on the franchise’s all-time hits list. Machado initially debuted in the league with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012, accumulating 997 hits there before moving to the Los Angeles Dodgers seven seasons later.
In comparison, Dodgers star Freddie Freeman currently leads active players in Major League Baseball with 2,357 career hits as of Tuesday — though he is almost 2,000 hits short of all-time leader Pete Rose. Jose Altuve, Andrew McCutchen, and Paul Goldschmidt are the other active players who have surpassed the 2,000 hits mark.
Despite Machado’s strong performance, going 3-for-5 at the plate, the Padres were unable to come back and defeat the Diamondbacks. The loss, their third in five games, brought their season record to 48-42.
