Ayton Thrilled to Join Dončić on Lakers: “Feels Like a Video Game”

New beginnings await Deandre Ayton, while the Los Angeles Lakers welcome their key center.

The former top pick in the draft was formally presented in Los Angeles on Tuesday, having signed a two-year, $16.6 million deal as a free agent following his buyout with the Portland Trail Blazers. Based on his comments, he is exceptionally excited about his potential contributions to the Lakers. He is especially eager to collaborate with Luka Dončić. According to ESPN:

“It all seems surreal, almost like a dream scenario,” Ayton, dressed in a sleek black suit, commented during his introductory press conference. “I’m immensely grateful for this opportunity and won’t take it lightly. Luka is a phenomenal talent, and I’m thrilled to be joining his team. I’ve heard he’s been working hard on his fitness, and I’m excited to finally be on the same side.”

Rumors have been circulating throughout the offseason about Dončić’s improved physique. The Mavericks’ concerns about his physical shape were a prominent talking point in Dallas after the trade, and he has reportedly lost a “significant amount of weight.”

Ayton has faced similar critiques during his two seasons with Portland, primarily regarding his on-court intensity rather than his physical fitness. The Lakers now provide him with an opportunity to demonstrate his potential as a dynamic player on a team with championship aspirations. Ayton acknowledged the distinct environment, according to ESPN:

“I felt the Lakers offered the optimal situation for my career,” Ayton stated. “They’re focused on winning a championship immediately, and I share that ambition. I want to contribute to a winning tradition and be among winners. … The past two years presented a different path for me, and I learned the importance of winning in this league to avoid being overlooked.”

Alongside Dončić and LeBron James, Ayton will have the opportunity to play with two of the most accomplished facilitators in the game. He expressed his excitement for the opportunity:

“Both have averaged around nine assists throughout their careers,” Ayton noted. “They elevate their teammates, making them more impactful and significant on the court.”

However, James’s presence isn’t entirely assured. The Hall of Famer’s future in Los Angeles remains uncertain, and there’s a possibility the Lakers might trade him to prioritize building the team around Dončić.
