The possibility of a second encounter between Ryan Garcia and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is reportedly in “advanced discussions”, potentially taking place in December. Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) has stated that he understands the reasons behind his defeat in the initial match against Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) and plans to rectify those issues for their upcoming bout.
Negotiations for December Showdown
Their previous clash at the Times Square event held in New York City this past May was not well-received by spectators due to its lack of action. Ryan was hesitant to engage offensively, and Romero’s performance was equally subdued. Many fans expressed their reservations on social media regarding the prospect of a rematch, given their disappointment with the first fight. They indicated a preference for both fighters to pursue different opponents.
According to Manouk Akopyan, negotiations between Romero and Ryan have “commenced.” Garica believes he has identified the factors that “contributed to his setback” in their fight last May, which culminated in Romero securing a 12-round unanimous decision with scores of 15-112, 118-109, and 115-112.
Ryan attributed his loss to a combination of factors, including injuries to both hands, a prolonged period of inactivity, and discomfort in performing before a smaller audience. These explanations seem extensive. It is plausible that Garcia’s defeat was due to his inability to overcome Rolly’s strength, physical presence, and assertive fighting style. This dynamic was evident during their sparring session years prior, where Rolly consistently outmaneuvered Ryan, even when the latter was at full health.
Postponing the rematch until December appears to be a less-than-ideal strategy for both athletes, as a sooner timeframe would be more advantageous. Delaying the fight until December would mean a seven-month hiatus from the ring for both individuals. However, with Turki Alalshikh potentially funding the event, the timeline for organizing the rematch may be less of a concern.
Garcia’s Quest for Redemption
Ryan might come to regret his decision to face Rolly once more. Another loss could significantly hinder his career prospects, diminishing the likelihood of a rematch with Devin Haney. Nonetheless, given Ryan’s substantial $50 million wealth, the outcome of the rematch with Romero may not have a drastic impact. He would still maintain his financial security and could opt for retirement if Turki decides not to include him in future events.
