LATROBE, Pa. — The recent chapter of Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren’s career can be understood through the words of NBA legend Pat Riley: “In every challenging situation, there lies a chance for equal gain.” Twelve months prior, Warren was building upon his most impressive season yet and seemed destined for an even more prominent role. However, a hamstring issue during Pittsburgh’s preseason debut, coupled with a knee problem during Week 3 of the regular season, transformed a promising year into a difficult one for Warren, who shared that the ordeal imparted a crucial lesson. “It was essentially a reminder of the efforts I sometimes avoided,” Warren explained regarding the injuries in a personal discussion with CBS Sports. “Or, the aspects I neglected, attempting shortcuts for simpler days. But that’s not how it works. There are no shortcuts in this journey. “Fully embrace each moment, utilize the recovery tools, dedicate the necessary time in the training area. Whatever your individual needs are, recognize them. So, that’s where my focus lies.”
Prioritizing relaxation, Warren mentioned, significantly influenced his occasional choice to return home after practices instead of remaining at the facility for activities like chiropractic sessions.”Instead of spending an additional half-hour at the facility, I [would] simply go home and unwind,” he stated. “I genuinely value relaxation.”

Despite the unforeseen challenges of the previous year, a revitalized and more informed Warren (while still prioritizing rest) aims to capitalize on the opportunities presented this season. Warren is well-positioned to be Pittsburgh's primary running back following the team's decision to allow Najee Harris to explore free agency. Harris and Warren developed into one of the league's most effective running back partnerships during their three seasons together.
"Being part of that was truly fortunate," Warren expressed about collaborating with Harris, who eventually agreed to a one-year contract with the Chargers. "I extend my best wishes to Naj. It was disheartening to see him leave our team. However, we recognize that this is a business, and outcomes are often unpredictable." The Steelers' choice to part ways with Harris highlighted both their confidence in Warren and their ambition to inject additional speed into the running back position. This ultimately led to the Steelers selecting Warren's new teammate in the backfield, Kaleb Johnson. "He's absolutely one of us," Warren remarked about Johnson, who has already been compared to former Pittsburgh All-Pro Le'Veon Bell. "We believe he brings significant and valuable attributes to the team. We're counting on him to contribute this year."
The Steelers will also rely on Warren, who, despite the injuries he faced last year, still accumulated 821 yards of total offense. Specifically, Pittsburgh will likely aim to leverage Warren's adaptability as a powerful runner who is also capable of executing plays both on the perimeter and in the passing game. Warren and Johnson, in addition to fulfilling the typical roles associated with their positions, will likely be more involved in the passing attack this year with Aaron Rodgers directing the offense.
Speaking of Rodgers, Warren, a former undrafted player whose dedication propelled him to become one of the NFL's most productive and reliable backup running backs over the past three seasons, undoubtedly recognizes the opportunity to play alongside a future Hall of Famer. After excelling in that backup capacity, Warren is determined to maximize his newfound chance with the objective of assisting the Steelers in achieving their ultimate aspirations.
"They clearly kept me on the team and provided me with an opportunity to be the lead running back," Warren stated. "They have confidence in my ability to assume that role. I will do everything within my power to seize this opportunity and make the most of it."
