Lemieux’s Penguins Bid Significantly Under Asking Price: Report

It seems the investment group headed by Mario Lemieux may need to increase their financial offer to regain ownership of the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to Elliotte Friedman, an NHL insider at Sportsnet, the initial proposal from the Lemieux-led group to reacquire the team from Fenway Sports Group falls considerably short of FSG’s acceptable selling price.

Earlier in the summer, reports surfaced indicating that a consortium led by Lemieux, along with former Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle and former CEO Dave Morehouse, expressed a “strong interest” in repurchasing the Penguins from FSG. FSG had acquired the team from Lemieux’s group in 2021 for nearly $1 billion.

DK Pittsburgh Sports reported last month that Lemieux’s group was allegedly willing to offer around $1 billion for the Penguins. Forbes recently estimated the team’s value at $1.75 billion. It’s conceivable that FSG is drawing comparisons to the recent transaction involving the Tampa Bay Lightning, which was sold for $1.8 billion.

As it stands, FSG faces no immediate pressure to finalize any agreement, suggesting that this situation could potentially extend for some time. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to assume that Penguins enthusiasts are enthusiastic about the prospect of Lemieux potentially rejoining the organization in the near future.

Lemieux, aged 59, undeniably holds the status of the most legendary figure in the franchise’s history. He served as the captain of the Penguins, guiding them to consecutive championships in the early 1990s. Furthermore, he was present in the owner’s box when Pittsburgh secured its three most recent Stanley Cup victories in 2009, 2016, and 2017.

Under FSG’s ownership, the Penguins have not replicated that level of achievement. Following a consistent streak of playoff appearances from 2007 to 2022, Pittsburgh has failed to secure a postseason berth in each of the past three seasons. The Penguins’ point total of 80 last season marked the franchise’s lowest point accumulation in a full 82-game season since 2005-06. Notably, that season was Lemieux’s final one as a player and the inaugural season for future Hall of Famer Sidney Crosby.
