Following an arrest during the offseason related to domestic violence, Atlanta Falcons linebacker James Pearce has received an eight-game suspension from the NFL on Friday, as reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The 22-year-old defender was taken into custody in February, facing multiple charges that included a pair of counts of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon. Additionally, he was charged with aggravated stalking, fleeing or evading law enforcement despite active sirens and lights, aggravated battery against a police officer, and non-violent resistance of an officer.
By March, one of the counts concerning aggravated battery with a deadly weapon was dismissed, which reduced the remaining charges against Pearce to four.
His arrest stemmed from an altercation involving his former partner, WNBA athlete Rickea Jackson. It is alleged that Pearce stalked her and initiated a vehicular crash while chasing her car. During the pursuit, Jackson was trying to make her way to a local police precinct when the crash occurred.
Following the crash, Pearce allegedly drove away from arriving officers, prompting a high-speed pursuit. Once he wrecked his own car, he reportedly tried to escape on foot before officers successfully apprehended him.
Reports in April indicated that Pearce would participate in a pre-trial intervention program. Should the linebacker satisfy the program’s requirements—specifically avoiding any contact with Jackson—he could see all remaining charges dropped. Successful completion of the program means Pearce will avoid incarceration and will not have to admit guilt, according to NFL Network.
Around that period, sources noted that the league was keeping a close eye on the ongoing legal situation. The NFL retains the authority to hand down discipline to players regardless of whether formal criminal charges are pressed.
Because of his arrest over the summer, Pearce was absent during team OTAs. Nonetheless, he was cleared to join his teammates for the start of the Falcons’ official training camp.
While he is permitted to participate in all of Atlanta’s exhibition matchups, his official suspension will commence with the start of Week 1. His earliest opportunity to rejoin the active roster will come in Week 9, just in time for the Falcons’ international matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.
Drafted by the Falcons as the 26th overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, Pearce put together an impressive debut campaign by recording 10.5 sacks across 17 matchups. His standout performance earned him a third-place finish in the voting for the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.
