Venus Williams: Oldest Winner Since Navratilova

When asked if demonstrating the doubters incorrect brought her any fulfillment, she responded: “No, as my presence is not for the sake of others, only myself.”

“I have no need to justify anything. None whatsoever.”

“I’m present for my own benefit, because it is my desire. Focusing on proving people wrong or even considering others has never resulted in a victory or defeat for me.”

Williams, who achieved 14 Grand Slam victories in women’s doubles partnering with her sister Serena, last tasted triumph in a singles contest in August of 2023.

Despite never formally announcing her retirement, the WTA designated Williams as ‘inactive’ after a 16-month period of absence.

On the specified Monday, she marked her return in the doubles event, partnering with fellow American Hailey Baptiste, securing a victory against Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue with a score of 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 16.

Williams, a past holder of the world number one ranking, had already accumulated four Grand Slam titles by the time Stearns was born in the year 2001.

“Her performance was strong tonight,” Stearns commented.

“Her movement was exceptionally fluid, surpassing my initial expectations, to be frank. Her serves were exceptionally effective.”

Williams is scheduled to compete against Polish fifth seed Magdalena Frech in the subsequent round.
