Giants-Rockies Brawl Erupts After Devers’ Home Run

Animosity ignited almost right away Tuesday at Coors Field.

The dugouts emptied and a substantial altercation occurred in the center of the playing field after Rafael Devers connected for a long ball during the initial frame of the Colorado Rockies’ 7-4 defeat to the San Francisco Giants.

The controversy appeared to originate from Devers’ response to his two-run shot. He took a few moments observing the baseball leave the stadium before beginning to circle the bases, which did not sit well with Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland. The two began exchanging words even before Devers reached first base, and then proceedings intensified very quickly.

Fists were flying in the infield area as competitors from both squads charged into the fray.

“I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t occurred before with that individual [Freeland],” Giants hurler Logan Webb expressed after the game, as reported by NBCS Giants. “He tends to talk a lot, and Raffy really got to him.”

Officials eventually separated the two teams and brought the game back under control. Freeland was tossed from the game, as were Giants players Matt Chapman and Willy Adames.

Devers’ two-run blast ultimately counted, even though he didn’t actually complete his trip around the bases before the conflict unfolded. He returned to the field and was able to finish the circuit once things calmed down.

The Giants eventually coasted to the three-run triumph, thanks in part to a three-run fifth frame in which Wilmer Flores and Casey Schmitt each launched home runs. The Giants, presently with a 70-69 record for the year, have now emerged victorious in nine of their past 10 contests and are endeavoring to make a late surge in the National League wild-card chase.

The Rockies, conversely, possess the poorest record in Major League Baseball at 39-100. They are the sole team in the league that has already been formally eliminated from postseason contention, as well.
