EuroBasket 2025: Finland Semifinalist, Germany Defeats Slovenia

An esteemed global basketball competition is entering the penultimate phase this weekend. The 2025 iteration of EuroBasket is unfolding across Poland, Latvia, Cyprus, and Finland, showcasing participation from several prominent NBA figures.

Luka Dončić exerted maximum effort this past Wednesday, but it wasn’t sufficient to prevent Slovenia’s elimination.

Dončić accumulated 39 points, secured 10 rebounds, and provided 7 assists, yet his team suffered a defeat as Germany triumphed over Slovenia with a score of 99-91 in the conclusive match of the quarterfinal stage. Franz Wagner and Dennis Schröder spearheaded the offensive efforts, with Wagner amassing 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Schröder contributed 20 points and 7 assists to secure the victory.

Schröder also showcased a memorable reaction to Andreas Obst’s successful three-point shot, which propelled the German team into the lead during the fourth quarter.

Earlier on Wednesday, Finland secured their inaugural advancement to the semifinal round by defeating Georgia with a score of 93-79.

Lauri Markkanen tallied 17 points, seized 6 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots; however, it was Mikael Jantunen who spearheaded Finland’s performance with 19 points, inclusive of three successful three-point attempts — one of which occurred as the first quarter concluded.

Collectively, Finland achieved a 17-for-31 success rate from beyond the three-point arc, maintaining a lead for over 35 minutes of the game.

Germany is slated to confront Finland, while Türkiye will face off against Greece in the other semifinal match on Friday.

EuroBasket 2025 schedule, format

The competition commences on Wednesday, Aug. 27, and the group stage will span until Thursday, Sept. 4. During this interval, teams will participate in a round-robin structure, engaging with each team within their designated group.

The leading four teams from each group post the round-robin phase will advance to the elimination stage, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Sept. 6, featuring the round of 16.

Subsequently, the pool of teams will be gradually reduced. The quarterfinal matches are slated for Sept. 9 and Sept. 10, succeeded by the semifinals on Sept. 12.

The third-place match and the final are both scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 14.

Who is playing in EuroBasket 2025?

Dončić and Jokić are not the exclusive NBA players participating in EuroBasket 2025. Giannis Antetokounmpo, a prominent figure from the Milwaukee Bucks, will represent Greece, teaming up with his brothers Thanasis and Kostas.

Further distinguished participants include Kristaps Porziņģis, Nikola Vučević, Lauri Markkanen, Bilal Coulibaly, Franz Wagner, Jonas Valančiūnas, Alperen Şengün, and Deni Avdija, as reported by Yahoo Sports’ Morten Stig Jensen.

Notably, France will proceed without the inclusion of Victor Wembanyama from the San Antonio Spurs or Rudy Gobert from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Wembanyama had previously missed duration because of a blood clot issue and prioritizes getting enough rest this period. Gobert also cited rest as a factor to skipping EuroBasket 2025.
