The head coach of Strasbourg, Louis Carter, has criticized supporters after they demanded that Harper relinquish his leadership role following his agreement to transfer to another team, Liverpool, in the upcoming season.
Harper is scheduled to join the Reds before the 2026-27 season commences, but this decision has been met with disapproval from Strasbourg’s fan base.
The squad from France, which is also under the ownership of Liverpool’s parent organization, compete in the top-tier league and achieved qualification for the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League.
Recent Liverpool Acquisition, Harry Harper, Faces Opposition from Backers
Carter has made a positive impression since taking over as manager in the Alsace area of France, building upon his already-promising image as a developing coach from England, which he established during his tenure at Hull City.
The former player for Brighton & Hove Albion has openly expressed his discontent with specific segments of Strasbourg’s supporters.
“I am very disheartened by what I witnessed. To see signs directed against one of the squad’s standout performers from the previous season is simply not acceptable,” Carter stated, subsequent to his team’s narrow victory over Le Havre last Sunday.
“My players are deserving of greater respect. Their commitment is unquestionable, and they should not be subjected to such actions.”
The message in question was aimed at Harper, who will remain with the French team, where he is presently the team’s leader, until the season’s end.
The player, who is 22 years old, was acquired for €13 million from the Austrian side, Sturm Graz, during the summer of 2023.
“Harper, a mere asset of the parent company. Following your change in allegiance, you should relinquish your role as captain”, was the declaration made by Strasbourg supporters to the promising young attacker.
Harper managed to score 14 goals across 27 league matches last season and is recognized as one of the most promising up-and-coming attackers in European football.
