NFL: Fields Concussed, Daniels Sidelined

Teams in the National Football League are now focused on the games of Week 3, with most teams holding their first full practice on Wednesday (except for the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, who will play on Thursday night).

The New York Jets created the day’s biggest story, announcing that quarterback Justin Fields will not play in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a concussion. Fields sustained the injury during their Week 2 defeat to the Bills.

The Jets are among several teams dealing with injuries to their starting quarterbacks. The Washington Commanders are carefully monitoring Jayden Daniels and his knee sprain, which he suffered in last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. Daniels did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, and head coach Dan Quinn stated that the team will provide an update following Friday’s practice.

“Jayden had a productive rehab session today and practiced throwing on the field,” Quinn mentioned.

Regarding the Minnesota Vikings, they will be without starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy because of a high ankle sprain, in addition to starting running back Aaron Jones, who was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. The Vikings added running back Cam Akers, who has played a total of 18 games for Minnesota in the past two seasons, to their practice squad to provide depth at the RB position.

The Cincinnati Bengals will be without their star quarterback Joe Burrow for a minimum of three months due to a turf toe injury. They made adjustments to address the situation on Tuesday, signing veteran QBs Mike White and Sean Clifford to the practice squad. Head coach Zac Taylor did not provide a specific timeline for Burrow’s upcoming surgery on Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers received encouraging news on Wednesday concerning their own QB situation, as Brock Purdy is able to participate in practice in a limited capacity while managing his toe injury. Mac Jones passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions in a victory over the New Orleans Saints, and he is expected to start the 49ers’ home opener this week against the 2-0 Arizona Cardinals, although Purdy has not been officially ruled out.
