Record-breaking mountaineer Jake Whisenant, known for setting the swiftest ascent up Yosemite’s iconic El Capitan, has passed away, a new report indicates.
Based on a publication by the California Post, which sourced information from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner, Jake’s passing occurred on August 3. Currently, the details and events leading up to his death remain undisclosed.
Bailee Moore, who identified herself as a close, long-term friend of Jake, honored his memory on social platforms, sharing that his family and friends find comfort in knowing he left this world while pursuing his deepest passion.
Jake gained widespread recognition in 2024 after he teamed up with fellow climber Brant Hysell to scale the Lurking Fear path on El Capitan in slightly under three hours—an achievement that reportedly shattered the existing speed record.
Alongside another climbing partner, Noah Fox, he also reportedly completed a double ascent of Yosemite’s famous rock wall, The Nose, in a single day—an incredibly exhausting and challenging endeavor that spanned over 14 hours.
Jake was only 30 years old.
