Shedeur Sanders on Flacco Trade: “He Helped Me a Lot”

The phrase “not for long” seems to be a recurring theme for the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback situation this year. Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders knows this all too well, as he witnessed Cleveland sending Joe Flacco to the Bengals this Tuesday, which occurred less than two months after the team traded Kenny Pickett to the Raiders.

Sanders, who is currently the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, mentioned seeing Flacco at the team’s practice facility following the announcement of the trade. His response suggests that the news of Flacco’s trade wasn’t a complete shock to those within the Browns’ facility. However, the swiftness of the trade seemed to catch everyone off guard.

“He informed me,” Sanders shared with FOX 8, “and I was taken aback by how rapidly it transpired. It was quite unexpected.”

Despite their limited time together, Flacco seemingly left a positive impression on Sanders.

“He was undoubtedly a valuable source of guidance,” Sanders commented. “I believe he significantly aided me during his time in Cleveland. Each individual possesses their unique path and intentions in life. I am genuinely pleased for him.”

Deion Sanders reacts to Browns trading Joe Flacco, Shedeur becoming QB2: 'I could care less who they traded'

Just a couple of months ago, the Cleveland’s quarterback lineup boasted the two rookies, along with a former starting quarterback and Super Bowl-winning backup in Pickett, as well as a Super Bowl MVP in Flacco. Currently, the quarterback roster consists solely of two players — Sanders and Gabriel — who have collectively attempted a mere 37 passes during regular-season games. Gabriel, who experienced a defeat in his initial start last Sunday against the Vikings in London, is preparing for his first away game this Sunday, facing off against the AFC North-leading Steelers.

Cleveland also continues to have Deshaun Watson on their roster, though he is still in the process of recovering from multiple Achilles tendon injuries. However, considering his underwhelming performance throughout his previous two seasons with Cleveland, it is entirely plausible that Watson may have already played his final game with the team.

As Sanders patiently anticipates his opportunity to play, Flacco is receiving yet another opportunity to take charge of an NFL offense in Cincinnati, where he is expected to assist the team in regaining momentum after suffering three consecutive defeats.
