A key figure at Red Bull F1, Laurent Mekies, has provided insight into why Max Verstappen exhibits exceptional qualities both on and off the track, following his engagement with the four-time world champion over the past quarter of a year.
Mekies transitioned from Racing Bulls to Red Bull Racing in July, succeeding Christian Horner. This move allowed him to collaborate with Verstappen directly, having previously admired the racer from afar during his tenures with Ferrari, the FIA, and Racing Bulls.
Mekies noted that the most remarkable aspect of their leading driver isn’t solely his top-tier performances in the Red Bull RB21 but also his rigorous work ethic and dedication behind the scenes.
“Everyone acknowledges his on-track prowess and his extraordinary capability to consistently push the limits, lap after lap, race after race, year after year,” Mekies stated on the new Securing the Win podcast, a collaboration between Motorsport Network, Red Bull, and 1Password.
“It’s understood that he establishes a standard there. However, the biggest revelation has been discovering his qualities outside of the car, where he is equally, if not more, exceptional compared to his on-track persona.”
“His level of commitment, profound comprehension of the team’s complexities in striving to provide him with the fastest possible car, and his ability to guide that team toward optimal car solutions are astounding. He is deeply passionate about racing.”
“You can contact him at any moment, and he’ll be engaged in simulator training. If he’s not in the simulator, he’s competing in another car somewhere in Europe. That illustrates the intensity of his character.”
Verstappen, who has re-emerged as a strong contender for the 2025 title after securing victories in three of the most recent four races, has been instrumental in Red Bull’s turnaround. The Milton Keynes team has adjusted its set-up approach to better reflect the feedback from its drivers, while also introducing enhancements to the floor design and front wing.
Mekies has consistently minimized his personal contribution to the team’s improvement since the summer break. Nevertheless, it’s understood that the former engineer has significantly contributed to enhancing communication within the engineering team and encouraging it to question its own assumptions.
Having now observed Verstappen’s interactions with the team, Mekies affirms that the reigning world champion possesses a remarkably accurate ability to communicate with team members while guiding the development of Red Bull’s cars.
“[He has] that inherent understanding that a significant number of individuals are working to enhance car performance, and you’ll need to select the appropriate words with each of them to assist them in performing at their peak,” Mekies clarified.
“That’s his daily practice. At times, it’s easy to underestimate Max’s central role within the team. It’s not just the team… and Max. He is fully integrated into the team. He’s steering the car’s development, and he’s influencing our strategies for the upcoming year.”
“That highlights the close relationship. And I believe it’s an immense, invaluable asset for us.”
