Fleetwood’s Comeback: India Championship Victory.

When an individual is given a specific label — be it a description or anticipation regarding their capabilities — it becomes challenging to shed. A blunder during university that resulted in a specific name? It might endure forever among companions. Years of behaving in a certain way prior to pivoting in another direction? The prior actions will be anticipated by those around you — expected by those you interact with — as opposed to the new direction.

Similar to a puzzle, the more intensely you attempt to free yourself, the more difficult it is to alter perspectives.

This is part of what makes the phase that golfer Tommy Fleetwood is currently going through so noteworthy. Carrying labels such as “underperformer” and “top-ranked golfer on the PGA Tour without a victory” for a long duration, the British athlete has notably altered his standing in recent months by persevering and remaining authentic.

In achieving this, he has not only altered how others see him but also his position among the top tier of golfers.

During a quieter stretch in the golf schedule, Fleetwood once again secured a win Sunday on the DP World Tour. After leading into the weekend at Delhi GC and giving up that lead Saturday, the athlete stepped up with a final-round score of 65 to win the 2025 India Championship at 22 under, a couple of shots ahead of Keita Nakajima.

“I mentioned at the start of the day, it’s yet another opportunity. These are occasions we’ll remember,” Fleetwood stated. “Whether it went my way today or not, I recognized the importance of going out there and enjoying the moment, to anticipate it. As it happened, my performance was excellent.”

Fleetwood’s victory elevates him to the second spot in Data Golf’s standings, second to only Scottie Scheffler, surpassing names like Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy. It is the continuation of progress that many considered the 34-year-old incapable of, considering his prior near misses on the PGA Tour, specifically how he performed earlier in the summer.

During the Travelers Championship, Fleetwood possessed a three-shot lead at the 54-hole mark. With just four holes remaining, his advantage remained unchanged, but he concluded the 72nd hole one stroke behind eventual champion Keegan Bradley. A comparable occurrence played out months later at the St. Jude Championship. Leading the pack as he started the final round, he increased his lead by the time he reached the 16th tee. Fleetwood played his closing three holes at 1 over par and found himself one stroke away from a playoff between Justin Rose and J.J. Spaun.

Understandably, Fleetwood maintained the right attitude when facing defeat — I’m nearly there, it’s only small margins, it would be hasty to change when I’m nearly turning things around.

Merely two weeks after at the Tour Championship, he was shown to be right when he clinched the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title.

“My victory at East Lake, I sincerely felt like I didn’t do all that much differently compared to instances when I had been defeated, and things had gone wrong,” Fleetwood expressed. “I believe I’ve gained knowledge from each experience, and today was set to be another one of those. I could have emerged victorious or not; I could have done the precise same actions and been defeated. I believe simply being in that scenario more and more is something I’m truly proud of, and it’s something I aim to continue pursuing.

“I’m aware that exceptional play doesn’t last indefinitely, but I’m striving to be the most dependable player I can be, and simply remaining in contention, feeling those nerves and needing to perform in the final stretch with the chance of victory is what we all desire. And I believe I’m truly determined to simply put myself in that position. I continue to gain insights each time, comprehending myself a bit more, and I’m simply happy that this was yet another challenge I managed to overcome and secure victory.”

Fleetwood’s triumph in India guaranteed that 2025 marked the second instance in his career where he has won more than once in a single season (2017). Including a dominant 4-1-0 showing at the Ryder Cup for the victorious European squad, it is a year that Fleetwood is certain to recall.

It’s not solely the championships and distinctions that Fleetwood will remember fondly but perhaps more his self-assurance and strength. Understanding that the course he defined for himself was accurate and that even when disapproval and doubt cast long shadows, he stayed on track and remained faithful to his values.

“I remain determined to strive and be the best I am capable of being, and I’m anticipating getting to work. I’m anticipating practicing,” Fleetwood said. “I still have a great deal to achieve in my career, and I understand that each day, how I think, how I act, how I practice, and how I work contributes to those aims.

“Whether or not I accomplish everything I set out to do is a separate matter, but I relish chasing those aspirations, and I understand that everything I do each day works toward that.”
