Mirroring his actions during games, Brady Tkachuk stood up for his fellow player away from the rink.
The leader of the Ottawa Senators spoke candidly on Saturday morning, confronting internet speculations concerning the basis of goalie Linus Ullmark’s personal absence. These speculations prompted general manager Steve Staios to issue a declaration days prior, characterizing the originators of these falsehoods as “online provocateurs” and “unwell individuals.”
Tkachuk stated, “I believe no one is particularly content with a narrative of that nature circulating.” He further expressed, “Criticism of our game performance is tolerable, but when family is brought into it, it is unequivocally abhorrent and untrue.”
He continued, “It is disgraceful that the situation escalated to this extent. I can assure you definitively that I am absolutely displeased by it.”
On December 28th, the Senators disclosed Ullmark’s decision to take a personal leave. During his absence, the team’s record stands at two wins, four losses, and zero overtime losses, having been outscored by 24 goals to 15, and currently occupies the second-to-last position in the NHL’s Eastern Conference standings.
The Senators were scheduled to play host to the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, on Saturday evening, following a pair of away defeats, one of which was a decisive 8-2 rout by the Colorado Avalanche.
The practice session held on Saturday morning marked the initial occasion for players to engage with local journalists regarding the internet speculation and the pronouncement issued by Staios two days prior.
In his statement, the General Manager declared, “Linus is currently not with our squad due to private matters, and he receives the full backing of the entire organization.”
He further elaborated, “We had requested that his privacy be honored, but evidently, that plea went unheeded by the most vile online agitators and malevolent individuals who frequent the internet. We find it repulsive that external entities are endeavoring to destabilize our hockey team. This declaration aims to conclude the absurd conjectures being disseminated across the web.”
Tkachuk expressed gratitude for Staios’ resolute remarks.
Tkachuk remarked, “It was commendable to witness him advocating for us.” He added, “This is an outlandish tale, and I cannot fathom who, in a rational state of mind, would conceive such a thing.”
He concluded, “Such is the contemporary state of our community and existence, where individuals are free to utter anything without accountability, often oblivious to the impact on others.”

Tim Stützle, a centre for the Senators, affirmed the team’s solidarity with Ullmark.
He articulated, “I wish to express my genuine appreciation for Steve’s actions in advocating for our collective group.”
He added, “The circumstances Linus is enduring… the assertions made on Twitter and various social media platforms are entirely baseless. We hold deep affection for him within this locker room; nothing untoward transpired, and indeed, he has our complete endorsement.”
Travis Green, the head coach for the Senators, reiterated the feelings expressed by his athletes.
Green stated, “Steve’s actions were commendable.” He continued, “We are discussing an athlete who is experiencing a deeply private matter.”
He further commented, “I believe individuals fail to grasp the profound impact such events can have on a person. Furthermore, a crucial aspect is that we operate as a unified team – encompassing ownership, management, coaches, and players – all of whom genuinely care, desire the utmost, and stand by one another.”

Last Friday, the Senators disclosed that they had secured the services of veteran goaltender James Reimer, aged 37, on a professional tryout contract with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Belleville Senators.
Green characterized the acquisition as a strategic measure to enhance team depth. Whether Reimer will eventually become part of the NHL roster is yet to be determined.
In Ullmark’s absence, Leevi Merilainen has undertaken the majority of the goaltending responsibilities and was slated to be the starting netminder for the game against the Panthers.
Tkachuk concluded, “We are currently enduring a challenging period, and our sole path to overcoming it lies in our collective unity, maintaining a positive outlook, and seizing the chance to achieve a significant victory this evening.”
