NCAA approves 15-day transfer window for college basketball after national championships.

University basketball programs will soon operate under an updated, more concise transfer period.

On Wednesday, the National Collegiate Athletic Association revealed plans to modify the athlete transfer periods for both male and female collegiate basketball, setting them at merely 15 days directly subsequent to the culmination of their individual national championship contests.

The alteration, put forward by the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committees during November, is slated for implementation in April. Consequently, the women’s basketball notification period for transfers will span from April 6 to April 20. For men’s basketball, this period will run from April 7 to April 21.

Furthermore, a 15-day opportunity to utilize the transfer portal will commence five days after an institution declares a new head coach. Should an institution fail to appoint a new coach within 30 days following the previous head coach’s exit, and if the 31st day falls beyond the date of the national championship match, a 15-day window will also become available.

This represents the third modification to the transfer portal timeframe since its initial establishment prior to the 2022-23 academic period. Originally, the NCAA permitted a 60-day window beginning after Selection Sunday of the NCAA tournament. This was subsequently reduced to 45 days after Selection Sunday in 2023, and later condensed to 30 days starting post-second round of the tournaments in October.

Under the new guidelines, athletic programs will need to delay their entry into the portal until after the conclusion of each respective tournament.

This constitutes one of multiple revisions enacted by the NCAA on Wednesday. For men’s wrestling, a revised 30-day transfer period will begin annually on April 1, a reduction from the previous 45 days. Men’s ice hockey will observe a 15-day window commencing after its national championship game. Men’s and women’s track and field will maintain a 30-day window that becomes available subsequent to the selections for the outdoor track and field championships, alongside a separate fall window.

The participants for both the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments for the current season are slated for announcement on March 15. The men’s Final Four competition is planned for April 4 and 6 in Indianapolis, whereas the women’s Final Four will take place on April 3 and 5 in Phoenix.
