MILAN — Lindsey Vonn’s impressive return has concluded, unfolding in the most unfortunate manner imaginable.
Commencing her run in the 13th position among 36 competitors in the women’s downhill event, confronting the formidable 2,572-meter Olympia Delle Tofane track, and launching from the starting gate precisely at midday, Vonn swiftly made contact with one of the course’s markers using her right shoulder. This impact caused her to lose control, rotate over a rise, and tumble uncontrollably with her skis.
A considerable distance down the slope, spectators observed in absolute astonishment.

Vonn lay motionless on the powdery surface, her cries distinctly picked up by microphones in the instants following the impact. Emergency medical personnel attended to her while the competition paused. Placed onto a gurney, an air ambulance descended to transport her away from the peak — a scene reminiscent of a previous incident slightly over a week prior in Switzerland, where she sustained an ACL tear. A quarter of an hour subsequent to the mishap, Vonn was raised off the slope and into the awaiting yellow aircraft high in the sky.
The compulsory airbag system, integrated beneath Vonn’s racing attire, successfully deployed, as reported by the Associated Press.
Vonn was transported by helicopter to Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso. “Later that day, she had an orthopedic operation to secure the broken bone in her left leg,” the hospital declared in an official communiqué. Her initial care took place at Cortina’s Codivilla Putti Hospital before her transfer to Treviso.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced that Vonn “suffered an injury, but remains in a stable state.”
“It was alarming, because witnessing the stretcher being deployed is never a positive indicator,” Vonn’s sibling, Karin Kildow, remarked to NBC. “We were just reflecting on the sentiment of ‘the man in the arena,’ how she exhibited immense courage. She gave her absolute everything. It’s genuinely difficult to witness, and we simply pray for her well-being.”

Near the base of the incline, Vonn’s compatriot Breezy Johnson remained composed, having just achieved the swiftest performance on the track, a look of worry clearly visible on her countenance. Johnson subsequently secured the gold, marking the initial medal for Team USA in these Olympic Games.
This past Sunday signaled the concluding chapter of Vonn’s extraordinary odyssey, a path replete with abrupt changes and intense activity, mirroring any challenging downhill track. Vonn, a recipient of three Olympic medals during the initial segment of her professional life, stepped away from competition in 2019, her physical state compromised despite her unwavering resolve. Throughout her professional tenure, she had accumulated more World Cup triumphs than any other female athlete, yet by the point of her cessation, those top finishes had become mere recollections. Incapable of even brief walks without discomfort, Vonn resigned herself to an existence away from competitive skiing, engaging in various endeavors ranging from reality television prominence to charitable work.
In the year 2024, she chose to have a partial knee replacement procedure, anticipating a future free from incapacitating agony. However, an astonishing development occurred: Vonn discovered that the discomfort, every bit of it, had vanished from her troubled knee. Subsequently, a notion crystallized in her thoughts: Why not return to the ski runs for another attempt?
“My firm belief upon my retirement in 2019 was that my career was definitively over,” Vonn recently stated. “I had established a fulfilling existence, and I genuinely felt content. Nevertheless, post-operation, I recognized that circumstances had fundamentally shifted. My physical condition felt exceptionally robust, prompting me to continuously challenge my limits to ascertain my potential, and competitive racing appeared to be the natural progression.”
She had experienced the entirety of the 2022 Beijing Olympics with a degree of annoyance, as acquaintances and fellow athletes frequently mentioned how the terrain there was perfectly suited for her abilities. Therefore, the knowledge that the 2026 Games were slated for Cortina d’Ampezzo — the location of her initial World Cup top-three finish, and an additional eleven, including half a dozen victories — solidified Vonn’s decision. She resolved to undertake a return to the sport unparalleled in its annals.
“I doubt I would have pursued this return if the Olympic Games were not hosted in Cortina,” Vonn commented. “Had the venue been different, I would likely have concluded it wasn’t a worthwhile endeavor. Yet, for me, Cortina possesses an inherent allure that consistently draws me in, and it has done so once more for a final occasion.”

From the very outset, Vonn encountered censure regarding her objectives, her apparent self-centeredness, and even her psychological condition. Esteemed Olympic champion Franz Klammer pronounced that “She has completely lost her senses,” a statement representing one of the milder condemnations.
Nonetheless, Vonn steadfastly continued her skiing pursuits, and before long, she started ascending in the rankings of World Cup competitions. She significantly surpassed U.S. Ski and Snowboarding’s criteria for assessing prospective Olympic squad participants, initially achieving top-three placements, and subsequently securing two additional World Cup triumphs.
During this period, she evolved from being a charming narrative and the focal point of NBC’s Olympic broadcasting to a bona fide contender for a medal. Occupying the sixth position in the World Cup standings merely seven days prior to the commencement of the Games, Vonn appeared poised to achieve an outcome that surpassed even the most imaginative stories.
Subsequently, catastrophe struck. Merely seven days before the inaugural ceremony, on a Swiss incline that had already witnessed numerous mishaps, Vonn spiraled uncontrollably off the designated path and collided with a protective barrier. She struggled to stand, her intense pain visibly etched on her features, necessitating helicopter evacuation from the locale. Shortly thereafter, medical professionals informed her of a complete rupture of her left ACL. Vonn’s Olympic return, by all appearances, would remain a pleasant tale, though one ultimately lacking a conclusive chapter.
However, Lindsey Vonn possesses a distinctive resilience, as the common expression goes. On Tuesday, four days following her accident and two days prior to her initial scheduled downhill training session, Vonn declared that indeed, her anterior cruciate ligament was fully ruptured, but she had no intention of withdrawing from the Olympic competition.
“Unquestionably, this isn’t the outcome I had envisioned,” Vonn stated. “I have invested significant effort to arrive at these Games in a considerably improved state. I am aware of my prospects prior to the incident, and I recognize that my opportunities are altered as of now, yet I understand that a possibility still exists, and as long as that possibility remains, I shall persist.”
She subsequently shared footage of herself engaging in weight training and performing jumps using the knee without an intact ACL, and responded assertively to online commentary concerning both her injury and her underlying intentions.
Thus, as Sunday morning broke over Cortina d’Ampezzo, Vonn held the prospect of conjuring an extraordinary moment. With global attention fixated on her, she pursued her objective wholeheartedly. While the conclusion proved tragic, the path she embarked upon was truly remarkable to witness.
“It’s truly unfortunate for her,” her American colleague Jackie Wiles, who secured fourth place, expressed afterward. “We constitute a very close-knit team. Lindsey has genuinely served as a profound guide for every one of us, and observing her fall in that manner is genuinely distressing.”
“Her enduring impact remains entirely unaltered. She embodies the spirit of a combatant, and that ethos will consistently define her approach to skiing.”
