Commandment demonstrated his capability for two-turn races and showed reserves of endurance in his victory at the $400,000 Grade 2 Coolmore Fountain of Youth Stakes on February 28 at Gulfstream Park.
Operating as the 2.40-1 betting favorite among a nine-competitor lineup in the Fountain of Youth, managed by trainer Brad Cox, Commandment gradually overtook the frontrunner Solitude Dude and fended off a persistent effort from Bill Mott’s Chief Wallabee, making his second career start, to secure a neck victory. The colt completed the 1 1/16 miles on a quick track in 1:43.33, paying out $6.80 on a $2 winning bet.
This triumph earned Commandment 50 crucial qualifying points on the leaderboard for the May 2 Kentucky Derby, presented by Woodford Reserve, thereby effectively ensuring his entry into the initial segment of the Triple Crown series.
Trainer Cox expressed satisfaction with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.’s positioning of Commandment throughout the race, noting particular encouragement from the horse’s performance beyond the finish line.
“I believed he had a favorable run, staying on the inside, and concluded strongly,” Cox commented. “He maintained his stride impressively post-race… successfully navigating the two-turn challenge.”
Given that the colt, offspring of Into Mischief, has now demonstrated his competence over two turns, Cox identified the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park as the “sensible next race” for Commandment, though he also mentioned the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes on April 4 at Keeneland as an alternative, contingent on the colt’s recovery from this race.
At the outset, Commandment collided with Bravaro before settling into a mid-field slot as the 50-1 outsider Rockies Balboa took an early lead, setting fractions of :23.16 for the first quarter and :46.89 for the half-mile. Approaching the far turn, the dynamics of the race shifted rapidly; Rockies Balboa fell back, and Solitude Dude, one of three horses conditioned by Saffie Joseph Jr. in the lineup, advanced to the lead around the three-eighths pole.
Meanwhile, Ortiz maintained Commandment in an unobstructed path, steadily moving forward. The pair drew nearer on the far turn, subsequently cutting sharply towards the inside rail as they approached the quarter pole.
“He has performed exceptionally well from the very beginning,” Ortiz stated. “I have confidence in him, and when an opening appeared, he was prepared to seize it.”
As Ortiz guided Commandment along the inside, Chief Wallabee launched a wide, four-path surge around the far turn, drawing level at the start of the stretch and battling intensely to the finish line, ultimately finishing a neck behind in what marked only his second professional outing and inaugural distance race.
Mott described Chief Wallabee’s performance in defeat as truly impressive.
“Given he was competing against horses with considerably more experience, I believe he truly delivered,” Mott commented, further mentioning that his team now has “a selection of four or five races” to consider for the colt’s subsequent engagement.
The Fountain of Youth Stakes awarded qualifying points for the May 2 Derby to its top five placers, allocated as 50-25-15-10-5 respectively.
Chief Wallabee secured 25 points for his runner-up finish. Solitude Dude maintained third place in his initial attempt at a two-turn event.
Joseph stated that Solitude Dude’s performance was strong, even though the specific race distance might not be his most suitable in the long run.
“Solitude Dude performed admirably,” Joseph remarked. “He was outrun by two quality competitors in a race distance that likely isn’t his optimal.”
Bravaro, also under Joseph’s training, claimed fourth place. Napoleon Solo, a Grade 1 victor as a two-year-old making his seasonal debut at three and competing over 1 1/16 miles for the first time, showed early promise but lacked late contention after turning for home, ultimately weakening to fifth.
