The Houston Texans are continuing their player movements before free agency officially begins. According to reports from Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 and Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Texans have agreed to a new one-year contract extension with right tackle Trent Brown, valued at $7 million:
Brown, at 32 years old, joined the Texans last year on an initial one-year, $3 million agreement, intended to serve as a versatile tackle. However, by Week 10, he had secured the role of starting right tackle. Once established in this position, Brown proved to be among Houston’s top offensive linemen, leveraging his considerable physical presence and strength to excel as both a formidable pass protector and a robust run blocker. His performance metrics for the 2025 season included:
-
Played in 8 contests (starting all 8, including postseason appearances)
-
Allowed 1 sack, 4 quarterback hits, and accumulated 12 pressures overall
-
Achieved a 69.0 Pro Football Focus grade (with 66.0 for pass blocking and 71.5 for run blocking)
As the season progressed, Brown emerged as an unexpected valuable contributor for the Texans, enhancing the team’s ground game particularly when facing teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. However, prior to joining Houston, Brown had accumulated a notable record of injuries, having participated in only 3 games during his sole season with the Cincinnati Bengals due to a torn patellar tendon, and playing in just 11 of 17 potential games for the Patriots in 2023. Even in the most recent season, Brown was absent at the start while recovering from his patellar tendon issue, and later sat out Houston’s divisional-round game against the New England Patriots due to an ankle problem.
Notwithstanding his recent health setbacks, this new agreement indicates Houston’s confidence in Brown’s capacity to remain healthy and deliver significant performance once more in 2026. The most effective offensive line lineup for the team during the regular season featured him as a starter, and it appears the Texans intend for him to replicate this role next year, particularly in light of Tytus Howard’s reported exit earlier this week. Whether he can complete an entire season as a starter again remains to be seen, but should he revert to the form he displayed during his 2022 New England season or his 2019 Pro Bowl campaign with the Oakland Raiders, the Texans’ tackle situation for 2026 will be well-positioned.
What are your perspectives on this matter? Do you anticipate Trent Brown having another strong season with the Texans, or will his performance diminish? Can he maintain a starting role at right tackle for the entire year, or will injuries continue to be a concern? Alternatively, might Houston still seek additional talent for the right tackle position through free agency or the draft? Share your opinions with us in the comment section below!
