After receiving physical therapy between points, Kartal dropped the initial set to the Kazakh competitor with a score of 6-4.
Subsequently, visibly struggling when trailing 4-3 in the second set, having conceded a break point after extending for a shot, she approached the net to offer a handshake.
The 24-year-old competitor had contended with the issue throughout the competition and mentioned needing to “stop” on Wednesday when the discomfort became more severe as the game progressed.
“As sportspeople, you possess an exceptional awareness of your physical state, and this discomfort has been present for virtually the entire event, so I somewhat understood I could persist,” Kartal conveyed to BBC Sport.
“However, today regrettably proved to be a single encounter beyond what I could manage.”
