Norrie, Boulter exit Miami Open

Turning to the women’s bracket, American player Coco Gauff overcame a slow start, dropping the initial set, but then rallied impressively to defeat Alycia Parks with scores of 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 in their third-round encounter. Meanwhile, Amanda Anisimova secured a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory over Yuliia Starodubtseva, and Victoria Mboko triumphed over Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 7-5.

However, former top-ranked player Naomi Osaka articulated her ongoing struggle to reconcile the demands of professional tennis with her role as a mother, following her 7-5, 6-4 loss to Australia’s Talia Gibson in their second-round match.

“I find this to be a real quandary for me,” stated Osaka, representing Japan, who rejoined the WTA Tour in January 2024 after taking a 15-month break surrounding the birth of her daughter in July 2023.

“My daughter holds immense importance for me, and my desire is to be a devoted mother. I aspire to be the best mother possible, yet at times I feel I understand the commitment required to excel as a top player, and it presents a significant challenge.”

“Because, personally, I aim to secure titles and perform at my peak, but if achieving that necessitates sacrificing substantial time with my daughter, I would prefer not to pursue it.”

Shifting focus to the men’s tournament, world number two Jannik Sinner achieved a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win against Damir Dzumhur, while Alexander Zverev defeated wildcard entrant Martin Damm 6-2, 6-4.

Zverev is scheduled to face Marin Cilic in the third round, after Cilic claimed a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory over Brandon Nakashima.

Local favourite Ben Shelton’s campaign concluded unexpectedly as he suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Alexander Shevchenko, who orchestrated a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 upset against the world’s ninth-ranked player.
