On Saturday, Ultimate Fighting Championship hosted UFC 327 in Miami, Florida. The primary event featured a much-anticipated clash for the unheld light heavyweight championship between Carlos Ulberg and Jiri Prochazka.
Ulberg arrived at the contest with an impressive nine-bout victory run, having recently secured a knockout triumph against Dominick Reyes. Conversely, Prochazka had achieved consecutive knockout successes against Khalil Rountree and Jamahal Hill, aiming to recover his light heavyweight championship.
Ultimately, Ulberg secured a shocking first-round knockout victory. Early in the fight, Ulberg sustained a knee injury. Even though he was compromised and practically on one leg, he managed to deliver a knockout blow. After UFC 327 on Saturday, here are my thoughts on the potential next steps for the athletes who competed for the championship.
Carlos Ulberg
Carlos Ulberg seized his opportunity to become the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s light heavyweight titleholder on Saturday, though the initial moments suggested otherwise. Ulberg injured his knee, seemingly tearing something, rendering him significantly impaired. Nevertheless, while pressed against the cage, he unleashed a powerful strike that knocked out Prochazka.
Despite Ulberg claiming the UFC light heavyweight championship, he is expected to face a multi-month hiatus for injury rehabilitation. Consequently, the trajectory of the title division upon his comeback remains unclear, with the possibility of an interim title bout. However, a sensible subsequent fight would pit him against Magomed Ankalaev, the erstwhile champion and top-ranked challenger. Ankalaev would probably be considered the favorite to secure an interim championship against other leading contenders.
Jiri Prochazka
Jiri Prochazka aimed to recover his light heavyweight championship on Saturday, and victory seemed imminent. Yet, Prochazka aggressively pursued strikes instead of patiently observing Ulberg’s compromised knee, resulting in him being caught, which was a frustrating outcome.
Following this defeat, Prochazka will require one or two more victories to re-enter contention for the championship. Therefore, a reasonable subsequent match would be against the victor of the second encounter between Jan Blachowicz and Bogdan Guskov. Should Blachowicz emerge victorious, that specific pairing represents a contest that has been anticipated for years.
