Sources from ESPN’s Shams Charania indicate that the Orlando Magic organization is reportedly discontinuing its association with head coach Jamahl Mosley.
This announcement surfaces less than a full day following the Magic’s squandering of a commanding 3-1 advantage against the Detroit Pistons during the initial phase of the NBA playoffs.
On Monday, Mosley issued a formal communication, conveyed through Charania, expressing gratitude to both the club and its fan base for their encouragement.
Mosley’s official declaration articulated:
“My tenure of over five years has been truly remarkable, and this club along with this community will forever hold deep significance for my loved ones and me. I genuinely wish that our presence here positively influenced the athletes, personnel, and the entire Magic franchise in a significant and enduring fashion. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the DeVos family for the exceptional chance to lead the Orlando Magic as their head coach. To our devoted supporters, my affection for you is boundless. The profound satisfaction derived from guiding this squad, in this locality, for its residents, is an experience I will cherish indefinitely. My sole aspiration was to instill pride in you as Magic enthusiasts, and my experiences here will undoubtedly remain a part of me always.”
Despite the squad establishing an early advantage in the series, the Magic proved unable to finalize their victory across the concluding three matchups. A physical setback sustained by forward Franz Wagner complicated circumstances, even as Paolo Banchero endeavored to propel the Magic to triumphs in the fifth and seventh games, accumulating scores of 45 and 38 points, individually, during those competitions.
Notwithstanding the team’s qualification for the postseason, Mosley’s position had become precarious over the past few weeks. Towards the close of March, following a series of six consecutive defeats, Orlando endured a devastating 52-point defeat against the Toronto Raptors, who subsequently achieved an unprecedented 31-0 scoring streak after the Magic had initially taken the lead in the opening quarter.
Subsequent to the defeat, Mosley unequivocally accepted responsibility. He stated, “I must enhance my capability to ready them for what they would encounter this evening. We addressed it somewhat, but likely not adequately. That burden rests with me.”
It seems that this culpability was also acknowledged by the Magic’s administrative staff, despite the organization retaining Mosley’s services throughout the playoff period.
Mosley assumed the role of the Magic’s head coach in 2021, following extensive experience as an assistant coach across various clubs. His appointment occurred in the wake of Orlando’s challenging 21-51 record during the bubble season; however, subsequent to a difficult initial year, Mosley successfully elevated the squad’s winning rate and ultimately guided the Magic back to the playoffs in 2024.
A contractual prolongation was formalized between Mosley and Orlando in 2024, scheduled to conclude upon the conclusion of the 2027-28 competitive year.
However, from that point onward, the squad’s progress has exhibited a degree of stagnation. Despite Orlando securing consecutive playoff berths in both 2024 and 2025, they were unsuccessful in progressing beyond the initial round. The Magic have not progressed beyond the inaugural round of the NBA playoffs since the year 2010 — a recurring trend that Mosley could not interrupt this current season.
Across his five-year tenure as the Magic’s primary coach, Mosley guided the team to an overall standing of 189 victories against 211 defeats. While the Magic participated in the playoffs during each of the preceding three seasons, the club did not manage to progress beyond the preliminary round, resulting in Mosley’s postseason record standing at 7 wins and 12 losses.
