The baseball club known as the Cleveland Guardians officially declared on Saturday that they had secured San Francisco Giants backstop Patrick Bailey. This transaction involved the Guardians sending their 29th overall selection in the upcoming MLB Draft and southpaw pitching talent Matt Wilkinson to the Giants.
In a related move, Cleveland reassigned Bo Naylor to their Triple-A affiliate in Columbus. Naylor had been the primary catcher for Cleveland through 23 contests this season, recording a meager batting line of .143/.200/.238.
Bailey, at 26 years old, is a recipient of a Gold Glove award in both of the last two campaigns. However, his offensive performance has not seen significant improvement this season, with his current batting average standing at .146, contributing to a career average of .224.
This player exchange occurred within the initial two months of the 2026 baseball season. The Giants organization has experienced difficulties during Tony Vitello’s inaugural season as manager, holding a record of 15 wins against 23 losses, with a recent slump of 2-8 over their last ten outings, positioning them at the bottom of the NL West division.
Conversely, the Guardians are leading the AL Central division with a record of 21 wins and 19 losses. Their roster is now enhanced by the inclusion of a player widely regarded as one of baseball’s premier defensive catchers.
The Cleveland team has been utilizing a tandem of Naylor and Austin Hedges for catching duties. Stephen Vogt, who earned consecutive AL Manager of the Year honors and was formerly a two-time All-Star catcher, has frequently chosen Hedges, particularly when the Guardians are up against a left-handed starting pitcher or when Parker Messick is pitching for Cleveland, as reported by The Athletic.
While Naylor bats from the left side, Hedges provides a right-handed offensive option. Although the data set is limited, Hedges’ statistics over 16 contests this season—a slash line of .306/.352/.449—have yielded more favorable offensive outcomes for the Guards. Nevertheless, it should be acknowledged that Hedges, a seasoned player, holds a lifetime batting average of .187.
Regarding Bailey, his inaugural Major League Baseball appearance occurred in 2023 with the Giants, the organization that chose him as the 13th overall pick in the 2020 draft. His defensive capabilities are exceptional, as evidenced by his ranking in the 99th percentile for fielding run value, a metric provided by MLB.com.
Wilkinson, the other participant in Saturday’s transaction, is a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher. Cleveland selected him during the 10th round of the 2023 draft. In six starts for the Double-A Akron team this year, he has achieved an earned run average of 1.59, recording 36 strikeouts over 28 and one-third innings pitched.
The Giants organization will now proceed with Wilkinson integrated into their minor league system, alongside an extra draft selection in the upcoming draft cycle.
