Rickie Fowler nearly achieved a memorable comeback on Sunday afternoon at Quail Hollow, though his charge ultimately unfolded a touch too tardily.
While the enduringly popular player was observing from the clubhouse, Kristoffer Reitan unexpectedly advanced to claim his very first PGA Tour triumph on the renowned North Carolina greens.
Reitan completed his concluding round with a 2-under 69, clinching a two-stroke victory at the Truist Championship. This represented his initial career win on the Tour, granting him an extended two-year playing status, having earned his place via DP World Tour qualifying in the preceding year.
“Honestly, I’m speechless. This outcome far surpasses anything I anticipated,” Reitan shared with CBS following his victory. “To see it materialize so swiftly feels surreal. It’s truly a dream realized.”
Briefly, it appeared Fowler was poised to secure his initial victory in a considerable period. Having commenced the day trailing by seven strokes, Fowler reached the halfway point of his Sunday round at 5-under, subsequently seizing the sole lead late on his latter nine holes. He had been aiming for his first Tour championship since 2024. However, Fowler missed a birdie attempt on the 16th and also bogeyed the final hole, concluding his day with a 6-under 65. This placed him in the clubhouse, a single shot behind the leading group of three.
Despite Fowler’s difficulties in closing out wins over recent years, he has demonstrated strong contention throughout the current season. He has recorded four finishes within the top 20 across his initial five tournaments this year, arriving this week following consecutive top-10 performances, which included a tie for ninth at the previous week’s Cadillac Championship. His entry into the week at 52nd in the Official World Golf Rankings represented his highest position since the middle of 2024.
However, as Fowler remained in the clubhouse, Reitan successfully hit consecutive birdies, then established a two-stroke advantage after Alex Fitzpatrick incurred a double-bogey on the par-3 17th. Reitan comfortably reached the 18th hole within the standard number of strokes and completed it with a simple tap-in par, concluding his round and confirming his victory. Across the back nine at Quail Hollow this week, he amassed a total of 11 birdies and one eagle.
Reitan, having secured a T41 placement at the Masters the previous month, has now achieved three top-10 placements in his most recent five competitions following his Sunday triumph. He has also claimed two career victories on the DP World Tour, and by finishing eighth in that European circuit’s standings last season, he gained entry to the Tour this year.
Fowler concluded the week tied for second place alongside Nicolai Højgaard, both at 13-under par. Fitzpatrick, whose Sunday round was a 2-over 73, secured sole possession of fourth position.
